Japanese Grand Prix 2010, Suzuka - Race 16/19

+1 for eyebrow man engine failure :D Lewis badly needs a high points finish here. Whitmarsh says McLaren are in attack mode so I hope they prove it and come out on top this weekend.

Nobody's done three race victories on the trot this season. Alonso's surely due a slip up at some point. It's a Red Bull track but McLaren have a some upgrades coming, and look to be strong in the 3rd sector. I'm hoping for a RB/McLaren battle.
Also, I'm not getting up at 5am on Saturday. Our baby is currently overdue, so I need all the sleep I can get for now :)

Yeah it's a shame not just for his F1 input but because he was a nice guy, shame he doesn't post anymore.

Indeed it is, who knows maybe he still lurks around these parts? One day he will return!

Can anyone confirm that FP2 will NOT be shown on red button for Freeview viewers? Noticed a tweet earlier that said it will be Common Wealth Games on red button instead :(

Erm, so is there are suggestion that for the last few months they have been in "relax and work hard only for race weekends" - mode? :p

At the end of the day McLaren have been working hard throughout the year, to make their car as fast as possible. As the season closes, I don't understand how they can go into "attack mode". If this is genuinely the case, you have to ask, why they weren't in "attack mode" a few months back when the RBR cars were qualifying 1s ahead of the McLarens.

I can only hope that this "big update" works out for them.

From past experience, it usually takes 1 full race weekend to begin to understand the new package and to extract the maximum out of the car. The race weekend where major updates are introduced usually result in an initial loss of performance. Mclaren, RBR and Ferrari have all suffered from this performance loss during the introduction of a major upgrade, this year.

Maybe he means that McLaren are still 100% committed to this years car instead of focusing on next years car?

What kind of reward do the team gain for a driver winning the WDC then? I understand the constructors title is a huge lump of money but a single driver winning cant really be amazing for the team can it? other than being able to say we've won a title..?

That's my only reasoning for the way Red Bull are doing things, keeping 2 drivers with good finishes for constructors points rather than focusing on a leader to gain the overall point advantage.

My understanding is that there are no financial rewards from the FIA, for winning the WDC. However, the Kudos of winning the title has major financial benefits.

When it comes to renegotiating sponsorship contracts, RBR can ask for more money. They can ask their sponsors to pay more OR there are plenty of other sponsors waiting in the wings ready to pay up, wanting to be associated with a winning brand.

The more championships/prizes/medals/events that a team/sportsman wins, the easier it is to market that team/sportsman and the easier it is to get sponsors to cough up more money.

If you look at somebody like Tiger Woods or Roger Federer...sponsors what these guys to endorse their products because they are winners. Plain and simple. Everybody (except for the Brits, who seem to adorn losers and underdogs), likes to be associated with success and winning. If RBR win the WDC, it will improve their standing from many different angles.

One argument against having Webber winning the title though, is that if their golden boy - Vettel - gets beaten by an average driver (which Webber is), it won't do well for Vettel's standing. Imagine the following conversation between a prospective sponsor and an RBR representative:

RBR: Yes, we have a fabulous new driver line up for 2012, with our man of the moment, Vettel, leading the team. We also have a new driver who we think will do great for us, who has replaced Webber. We believe we have one of the best cars for 2012 and as such believe we will be winning everything. On this basis our sponsor ship prices are a little high, but as we will be winning so much and sponsors will be getting a lot of TV time, we think it'll be more than worth it.
Sponsor: Oh. Vettel. Wasn't he the guy who got beat in 2010?
RBR: Erm Yes.
Sponsor: ok, but he got beat by Webber who isn't really regarded as that great.
RBR: Erm Well.
Sponsor: So, if he got beat by Webber, how is he going to beat Alonso's Ferrari or Hamilton's McLaren? I mean, why shouldnt we offer Ferrari or McLaren, the same money you are asking, so that we can get our name printed on their cars? Surely they stand a better chance of winning than you...right?
RBR: Erm...Vettel has improved.
Sponsor: But, why should we invest in your team, as opposed to Mclaren or Ferrari?

For RBR, it makes more sense to ensure that Vettel finishes ahead of Webber. He is their chosen one and Horner made a right balls-up during the middle of the season which has resulted in even employees from posting on message boards (CSI NUTS). Crazy.

Ferrari have strong management, who stand by their decisions. If Webber was at Ferrari, he would be told in no uncertain terms that Alonso is your team leader. If he tells you to move over. You move over. No arguments.

The number 1 and 2 on their car lol

Also nobody cares who wins the constructors championship.

both drivers also confirmed it was availlable at the last race but wasnt actually used for quali/the race , whether they used any of the parts during practice sessions is another matter

Either way they have 2 weeks more of data , which MIGHT eleviate some "loss" in performance, when they could have chosen to be more ...careful ....with upgrades

Its worth huge amounts of additional revenue for the team having that "1" on their car - with advertising, memorabilia and such like

Also nobody cares who wins the constructors championship.

thats not wholly accurate, Im sure the sponsore REALLY care

on an individual level you may be right (apart from members of the winning team lol)
