job: customer services + administration role

company: Knowhow/DSGi

day to day: normal customer services role, administration tasks such as money management

overall job: Somewhat as day to day, but sometimes you just dont know what is going to come in

perks: discounts are ok, in my role I can advance quite far especially if i move into the operations side of things

downsides: People shouting at you when things go wrong and its my fault, retail shifts, pretty high stress levels during peak

do you like your job: Yes and No, proud to say we are one of the smallest stores in the region and country, yet the whole company is talking about us due to our performance. Really dislike the pay im on, which is the same as the new starters as its all through training and we dont get a chance to do it. Only planing on being there for abit longer now as I want a 9-5 job again after being on placement the other year.

Job

Electric Motor Repair Specialist

Day to day

Work in a dark, dank workshop all day fixing anything from simple AC motors to sewage pumps. If I'm really lucky I get to go out on-site but then that's not always great either.

Overall Job

Same day in, day out really.

Perks

None.

Downsides

Farmers, deranged customers, smelling/contact with fecal waste, Mc Donald's and freezing in winter.

Education?

Computing (Computer Systems) Second Class: Upper Division (2:1)

Do you like your job?

Nope.

Job

Car Sales Executive

Day to day

I'm the new guy, so there's a lot of shifting cars from branch to branch, preparing for sale (more paperwork stuff - I don't do any cleaning), sorting out the pitch. Then it's a case of trying to get customers either through walk-ins or through the phone. Dealing with sales, deliveries, etc etc. Often found hanging around the coffee machine.

Overall Job

Same day in, day out really.

Perks

Company car. Pretty autonomous, good colleagues, get out and about. Potential to make really good money. 50 days holiday.

Downsides

Hours. Lots and lots of hours.

Education?

Degree.

Do you like your job?

It's OK so far. I've only been there a month but it's enjoyable enough.

Job
Credit Risk Analyst

Company
Three / Hutchison 3G

Day to day
SAS reporting, scorecard building and monitoring, strategy changes and general ad-hoc queries.

Overall Job
I work on building and maintaining the acquisitions strategy for handsets, MBB and tablets. General idea is to let in the good customers with a strong propensity to pay, and keep out the crap, whilst taking on marginal customers which account for our risk appetite. So if you get declined for a product from Three, that would be because of me.

Perks
Fantastic pay, 9-5 Monday-Friday job with no overtime or any form of extended hours. I work with a really great team in a relaxed atmosphere. I get to travel a bit. I have the freedom to look into whatever I deem necessary and make changes if required, I have access to almost all of the data available within the entire business. Job is very interesting in general. Also free phone, unlimited calls to UK and international, unlimited data, and free MBB.

Downsides
Commuting into Glasgow city centre every morning.

Education?
BA + MSc in Applied Statistics and Operational Research
Various SAS programming certificates.

Do you like your job?
Love it.

Job
Procurement & Estates Manager

Company
NHS Social Enterprise

Day to day
Emails, meetings, site visits, phone calls, the usual to keep things ticking over.

Overall Job
My days vary quite a lot, but generally it will be producing/scoring tenders or RFQs for anything from stationery to decontamination services, assessing medical equipment, developing Estates related policies, chairing a few groups, etc. I can get involved in any aspect of Estates or Procurement, from Strategy meetings for the region to purchasing paper.

Perks
Company is very open and a great culture, my boss is fairly lenient on the amount of times I'm late :D I have autonomy to plan all my work to what I see is the priority and my job gives me exposure to a massive amount of learning and development in areas I have not looked at before. And it's 15 minutes from home to work.

Downsides
I work in a team of one so few to learn off or bounce ideas around with. There is no chance of progression from my current role in the company (although not bothered at the moment).

Education?
A-Levels in Business, Economics, Accounting, Maths

Do you like your job?
Overall I'm very happy with my job.

Job

Hydrocarbon Allocation Engineer (sort of sub division of Process Engineering)

Company

Total

Day to day

On a very basic level I QA/QC daily production data from our North Sea oil/gas wells to see what we think they should be producing vs what our process simulation model/spreadsheet are calculating for each well. The job title comes from the fact that we 'allocate' oil and gas to each well so we have a record of what we think it is producing (funnily enough most oil and gas wells aren't metered, technically it's only what leaves the platform that you have to meter).

Overall Job

I also look at long term trends, problem solve, propose/implement improvements to our systems, do long term studies etc. There's a good balance between daily/weekly/monthly tasks and more random ad hoc work which is good. I also deal a fair bit with reservoir and well performance engineers which keeps things interesting :).

Perks

The people are generally fun to work with, the ability to go on lots of training courses (both technical and non technical) and free lunches. Engineers also tend to move roles ~2 years which is good. Then there's all the usual stuff you'd expect from a large oil & gas operator (pension, healthcare, dental, gym membership, share schemes etc etc).

Downsides

The systems and programs we use aren't the best, although they are being replaced eventually with something better hopefully quite soon. It's sometimes frustrating working with programs and systems which aren't really fit for purpose any more.

Education

MEng Chemical Engineering

Do you like your job?

In general yes, can be hard work but it's usually quite satisfying and I've learnt a lot since starting there.

Job

Technical & Office Support

Company

Laboratory

Day to day

Desktop support, looking after the DMS, Accounts Payable

Overall Job

It's a small company and do whatever is needed. The above are my main jobs, but I also backup the warehouse (I'm HazMat trained) and customer service when needed. I'm also taking IT certs and hope to be more responsible for the server-side of things eventually.

Perks

Pretty good pay, health/dental/vision insurance (I'm in the US...), employees are treated very well - we all get birthday lunches and a huge cake on the company, very extravagant Xmas parties and summer BBQ parties. Professional development is encouraged and all paid for.

Downsides

Health benefits above aren't the best (company only pays 60%, which is on the low side. Previous company paid 100%!). Being the US, there is virtually no paid holiday.....work is expected to come before everything else. The woman who owns the company needs to retire as she clearly has Alzheimers :( She recently handed over the presidency, but is now staying on as CEO. I totally understand that it's her company that she built from scratch and it must be extremely hard to let go......but it's time.

Education?

Erm, nothing much after GCSE level! I did a crappy B-Tec in graphic design after I left secondary school. I also started on my Systems Admin Specialist degree earlier this year and my plan was to work PT and study PT......but then this FT job came along and it was a too good an opportunity to miss. So now I'm just going to do certs instead.

Do you like your job?

Yes - I love the variety. Only downside is that I'm so busy doing a bunch of things that I'm not getting as much hands-on learning on the servers as I had hoped. Still, not complaining too much!

Job

Field sales (no I dont sell fields lol)

Company

Identity management company

Day to day

Booking meetings to see clients, travelling around the UK. Raising paperwork and pestering clients to buy from me

Overall Job

I sell data cleansing, so removing bad data from client databases, think people who have moved house, died, bad landline numbers etc. Also selling the postcode software you use on websites (postcode > list of addresses). I aim to hit my sales target

Perks

As long as I deliver I can almost do it how I want. I see who I want to, when and how. So I chose my travel plans, pick my hotels etc. I'm allowed to wine and dine clients too which is great. I get my birthday off and an extra days holiday for free every year we stay with the business. I also work from home and get a car allowance. I'm in a position of trust which is a great perk! I also have private medical insurance and free councilling if needed. I only work Mon-Friday.

Downsides

Huge pressure to hit target and deliver my number. Long hours and lonely time spent away from home. Every month your achievement goes back to £0.

Education?

You dont need any particular degree etc, its more about drive and ambition.

Do you like your job?

Yes and no. Lots of perks, big downsides though. At 25, I think im in a great position though

The efficiency is usually the actual production as a percentage of the overall potential production of the platform. Is that what you meant?

I was meaning process losses from the actual plant and equipment. I guess it wouldn't happen so much as treating water where everything needs to be super clean and uses a lot of water to do so.
