Forgot to mention earlier someone mentioned Terry talking out in the world cup and his lack of support somehow signalling how respected a captain he was.
I'd point out that, everyone else was just **** scared of Capello because to that point he was an unreasonable, idiot of a manager. Considering not long after Terry spoke out Capello had a MASSIVE turn around in his treatment of the team, giving out team sheets earlier, deciding NOT to completely isolate the players, almost everyone has said the mood in the camp improved dramatically.
Similar to Gallas speaking out at Arsenal a few years ago, it galvanised the team, and up till he left everyone said that even as not the official captain he was still the leader as everyone respected him.
A captain who cares more about the team than being punished by the manager or looking like he's on his own is someone who is doing their job. A captain who won't say anything for fear of rocking the boat, is a spineless ****.
The fact that no one stood by Terry despite THE ENTIRE TEAM AGREEING WITH HIM, only stood to serve that everyone else in the team at that time is a spineless pratt.... quite literally in Rio's case
I don't like Terry, but questioning that kind of thing which was pretty much the very definition of being the captain, is laughable. As I said, seeing as no one else was remotely man enough to stand up to Capello despite everyone being angry about the way the camp was run, says anyone there doesn't deserve to be captain.
Individual players who can turn in a performance and get a goal doesn't mean captain material, nor really should Gerrard, who decided rather than celebrate his goal, to wind up his England team mate(or the fact he paid his friends to go to jail for him) be remotely considered.
Parker is pretty much the only choice right now.
