Terry so well respected by his fellow pro's that when he decided to speak out at that press conference at the last tournament they all left him hung out to dry and denied agreeing with him. Doesn't sound like the right leader to me, besides they all played like **** under his 'leadership'.

I'm not screaming for the reinstatement of Beckham, am I? I'm not saying he's a thug, so may lose his head on the pitch, so shouldn't be captain. I'm just saying he's not a role model, so shouldn't be a captain of a national team.

but you see my point that role models don't always make the best captains.

there has been plenty of ****'s that have been excellent captains that are not whiter than white. (no pun intended)

lets keep to the england/man utd theme, Keane/Beckham/Robson all great captains for both club and country, yet none of them are what you would call role models, so does that rule them out of being good captains?

exactly.

I dont understansd the problem with this.

If you were accused of this at work you'd suspended on full pay pending an investigation.

Telling him he wont be able to wear the completely worthless england captain armband is hardly the end of the world for him, and a whole let less than he should be getting for it.

yes.

it's not like the england captaincy is anything to aim for, for a footballer nowadays. i imagine the likes of Rooney would, as in Beckhams case make him grow up a little bit, he speaks well enough with the media now that he could do it no problem. passion, aggression, skill and the fact he's the talisman of the team anyway, why would he not be considered!

Because a higher standard is required of international captains, imo. Being a general role model isn't required of a captain of a sports team, but I think it should be a requirement to captain a national team.

If he's such an inspiration to his teammates, he can still do this on the field. You can have numerous leaders on a field. The captain of the national team is also a figurehead, though... so a general role model.

they were all international captains though, i see your point completely but to rule Rooney out because he can be petulant and lose his head and that he's a bit of a thug is a crap argument to have.

some of the best captains and i think you'll agree that 3 i named off the top of my head were 3 excellent captains were not role models in the sense you are mkaing out. Keane was an utter thug, great captain, Beckham could be petulant and he cheated on his wife, great captain, Robson was alcoholic and instilled the drinking culture that Ferguson wiped out, great captain.

they were role models because of the way they played the game and how they led their teams.

I know they were good captains, etc. I'm just saying I think that we should have x standard now. I don't care about the past - we can't change it - I'm talking about from now on.

therein lies the problem, there isn't anyone with the minerals to do it.

there may be good captain material within the squad but are they going to be starting every game, Rooney would and the only other outfield player i can think of is Cole and he's getting on a bit and he's never struck me as a captain.

So surely you know how people can be leaders/express leadership qualities, without being labelled a captain...

of course but you don't really see it at that level.

and you must surely realise england need that type of captain.

No doubt when Capello goes there will be some kind of clear out (Finger Crossed and everything else) of the players we have tried to shoe horn into this England team. Get Terry, Ferdinand, Gerrard and Lampard out to pasture. Build for the future with a certain degree of continuity. Joe Hart get's my shout

this. I'd have sacked them off before now to be honest with the goal of having a good run at 2014.

Get Wilshere, Sturridge, Welbeck, Jones, Smalling in now and let them play together and build an understanding. They'll make mistakes but they're good enough not to get humiliated and I can't see they'd do any worse than we're going to anyway.

Let Gerrard have it for 2012 and then sod off all the old guard straight after.

I have been hoping that since about 2000. It never happens, they do it for a game then get the big 'stars' back. The money generators for the FA.

They can't build an understanding playing 4 or 5 games a year together. ALl that will happen is Fergie will pressur ehis players to phone in sick only to play on the upcoming saturday, Wenger will do the same etc etc.

Not that I wouldn't do the same in their position by the players and managers do all they can to cry off england friendlies once the boyhood dream novelty wears off after 3 or 4 matches.

Rooneys best match is still probably his first :D

Ill sound biased but i said it first time he lost it Gerrard should have remained the captain obv he got injured but if he hadnt it should have stayed with him.

When he lost it the first time it went to Ferdinand, by that then despite Ferdinand's fitness problems he should have kept it

I think maybe Gerrard isnt a bad choice. I'm not sure that Lampard should take it, i think hes a bit arrogant at times and doesnt always perform when he should, hes a great player dont get me wrong but maybe its time for one of the younger guys to make a stand for it, maybe Hart. Or atleast some one that can realistically play in the next Euros and World Cup.
