"Just stop oil"

shortsightedness - that's still Captain Hindsight - what is the example economy that has had such an effective low carbon energy strategy - Norway - hmmh.

steel and carbon intensive goods we might make from new mine, will soon attract carbon border taxes going into EU too
I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic with your first point, since Norway are a major O&G producer, but simultaneously adopter of renewables and electric cars, but Norway's per capita CO2 emissions are currently about 50% higher than the UK's.

whether we import more oil in future after halting exploration & extraction of new sites in the North Sea

I would be interested to know what percentage of the oil extracted from new sites in the North Sea will be used in the UK (to lower demand for oil imports and their associated transportation CO2 emissions) and what percentage of it will be exported. We already know that most of the coal from the new mine in Cumbria will be exported rather than being used in the UK.

Michael Gove approved the new coal mine because he said he was "satisfied that there is currently a UK and European market for the coal". That is rather misleading as it's coking coal mostly used for steelmaking and most UK/EU steel producers have turned away from using it. The Climate Change Committee, which advises the government, say that 85% of the coal produced by the new mine will be exported.

I would support the mine if the coking coal from it is only used in Britain to make steel for new wind turbines, new nuclear power stations, energy storage apparatus for renewables and essential military products, since that would save the CO2 emissions on transporting imported coking coal here from the USA/Australia etc. However, it is not going to be used for those purposes and most of it is going to be shipped abroad and sold.

As someone else on a video comment said, these bozos protested to get people to ride the bus to save the planet, and now they are blocking the buses.... Smooth brain moment if there ever was one. Some of them surely deserve the pushing and shoving and kicking and screaming :D

Like a lot of these types, it doesn't matter what they're saying they want just now. They don't want change, they just want inconvenience. They'll keep complaining and making you miserable, regardless of how far you bend over backwards.

The people who defend these cretins are even worse than them.

No one has the right to stop people going about their daily business.

Exactly.

If they want to demonstrate on the side of the road, waving banners, OK.

But they don't, they're deliberately going out of their way to inconvenience people, and don't give a **** what harm they cause.

Didn't someone die last year when they blocked a motorway, due to not being able to get to hospital?

Would love to see a group of people go up to them and force take their phones, shoes etc, Plastic and rubber afterall, hypocritical cretitns. They all have backpacks bet they have food wrapped in guess what, Plastic, take it away from them.

Then tie them to lampposts and tress.

Isn't farming more impactful on the climate than anything else? Specifically cattle farming, cows etc? Hope every single one of them is vegan also.

Around 14% of global emissions I believe, where as aviation is like 3%.
but everyone has to eat, whilst its just a few percent of the population are burning those aviation 3%, so the 3% have bigger personal carbon footprints,
and the aviation contribution needs just as much criticism ... aviation offenders should be easy sticking for JSO.

Just for info - from our world in data, U.K. CO2 emissions over time:

https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/annual-co2-emissions-per-country?facet=none&country=~GBR

If we just take CO2 emission within the U.K. we've reduced them to a level equivalent to that last seen around the 1900's

If you take into account CO2 emission including those from trading:

https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/prod-cons-co2-per-capita

It's a similar story if we take into account trade.

The point being - we've been very effective in reducing our carbon footprint as a country.

We could never do enough to appease these morons and we should'nt even try.

The difference is that there is a real alternative to beef which is by far the biggest contributor that could be deployed now. It's called eating plants or even chicken is considerably less impact.

There is no realistic alternative to the impacts of aviation or shipping which isn't reverting the economy back to how it worked in 1900, that sounds really fun.

Fight the battles that you can actually win and save the currently impossible for another day.

People want to eat beef though, and the people who think animals are responsible for global warming or whatever the more severe sounding name for it is these days, need throwing in the Loony Bin.

Overpopulation is the only battle that can win. Everything else is chump change really.

Only problem is our whole society is built on a pyramid scheme that requires young blood to feed the older.

...and science keeps us living longer.

If Sir Walter Raleigh had not introduced us to tobacco and potatoes we would be at about 13 billion around now.

:D

lol, well its us, we're creating the problem by breeding and killing 80 billion land animals a year, and we can reduce the impact massively by stopping eating meat and dairy, its not complex.

Il post the link again, maybe actually read it? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-66238584
