I've found Cuman camps do over time, not sure on bandits. What causes them to I don't know.

Just go for it, follow the main quest until you get to be able to use a bow, learn to read so you can mix your own potions then go open up the map, explore any sites of interest you find which often have hidden caches of valuables, poach what you can to build up your bow skills, cook the meat on any available camp fire and sell it on, use the money to kit yourself out. None of the missions that you need to get that far are broken (in fact very few are) and that will certainly keep you gainfully occupied until the next bug fixing patch comes out in the next few days (1.4 BTW).
 
Yes, 1.4 was getting ahead of myself.

Just read that they hit a nasty combat bug while testing and have spent a few days trying to fix it and need some more time.

As you suggest I will just carry on regardless.
 
Can anyone tell me what it means but the main story moves on in terms of real-time?

Ive read that the story line progresses regardless, what does it mean and how does that work? If I didnt do the main quest would I just lose it??

Awesome. I've been waiting for this patch before I start playing this game properly. If it is out tonight then I'll have something to do tomorrow evening. If not I'll play some World of Warcraft.
