Know any Weeaboos?

I'm what some would call a 'weeaboo', I love Japanese music, culture, food, religion and history etcetera.

So what?

Am I now not allowed to love another culture? Is it wrong that I don't wake up in the morning and shout "Hail Britannica" and then start singing the national anthem?

Arguably there is a line one draws between "love of" and "obsession of" and perhaps one should try to stick to the former, but I do not validate the 'hate' of people in this thread, on this board, or any other location where a keyboard-warrior may reside.

What's pathetic is people sitting behind their monitors attacking people because they don't understand what or why they do what they do.

Get a life.

Seems like a bit of harmless fun to me. Each to their own I say. At least she's not cutting herself or sicking up her food (as far as I know).

The only bit of Japanese I know is 'wax on, wax off'.

Ever been there?

not just as a holiday, but to live there for a while

Thats pretty much my way of thinking too. My plan is to go there in July for a month, which will be spent travelling around and camping (to keep the costs down). And then if all goes well I'm hoping to return in December and working there for a while. Also to dodge the British winter time.

I'd love to be in Japan at christmas time. Where else can you find santa riding a giant mechanical panda? :D

How can you aspire to be a resident of a place you've never even visited? Surely the TV shows that you watch etc portray the country in a mostly flattering way, consequently you have an idealized version of it in your head?

e.g. - wanting to be an American because of the lifestyle you have seen in Friends, when in reality it's nothing like that. (I am preparing to be shot down by the Weeaboos in denial for this question, but I do think that I have a point...?)

Yes but that isn't why people want to live in America is it?

People don't just get their information on another country from it's TV shows. They listen to friends and relatives who have been there, read many unbiased books on the place, read peoples accounts on the internet, watch documentaries about the place etc etc

I havn't yet been to Japan, but I can tell you for sure that it isn't just Japanese televison and pop-culture that make me want to go there.

Out of interest - what is it which draws you there?

Regarding my comment about Friends. No, that isn't the sole reason, though media, in my opinion, does influence peoples' thoughts on a country. For example; Johnathan Ross. Undoubtedly the most well known 'fan' of Japan (Japanorama) but what separates him from a 'weeaboo' is that he actually goes there and indulges in the culture.

If you haven't been there then all your opinions are based on secondary accounts which are no necessarily accurate depictions of the country.
