Out of interest - what is it which draws you there?

Regarding my comment about Friends. No, that isn't the sole reason, though media, in my opinion, does influence peoples' thoughts on a country. For example; Johnathan Ross. Undoubtedly the most well known 'fan' of Japan (Japanorama) but what separates him from a 'weeaboo' is that he actually goes there and indulges in the culture.

If you haven't been there then all your opinions are based on secondary accounts which are no necessarily accurate depictions of the country.

But what is it that would make you want to go to any other country for a holiday? Probably because you've heard from somebody/somehow that it's good, and you believe them

My own interest goes way back to when I was 4 and watched Japanese TV shows such as "Monkey", "Battle of the Planets" & "Star Fleet" from there onwards I've always had an interest in Japanese pop-culture. Although not an obsession until much later.

What makes me want to go are things like this ;
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3067683435545761102

It's a 'home-made' travel account of a guy who went to Japan and walked from one end of the country to the other. Seeing his experiences made me want to do something similar (although his trip 6 months, and I'm initially only going for 1).

Perfectly legally uploaded video btw, and HIGHLY recommended

Surely you've just legitimised what I've been saying - you're basing your assumptions on what you've seen other people do?

This guy (the video you posted - i haven't watched it all yet just bits but I will do) went to Japan for 6 months, and shortened his trip into a video of 'best bits' - a 1 hour video of stellar experience. So (again remember I haven't watched it all) you're basically watching a wholly positive account of one persons experience and using it to compound your opinions!

This is hardly the fault of this person - or any others for that matter - as they're unlikely to make a video saying 'this is where I was mugged' - those experiences are left out.

Regarding your point about a holiday - fair point - however, if I were going to , say, Spain - I wouldn't learn Spanish, grow a beard and wear a sombrero.

I would go there to realise that this isn't my culture, and trying to emulate the way of life would make me look imbecilic (not calling you an imbecile!) to the locals as im conforming to a stereotype of their nation which is not true to the actual country, just what 'del boy' sees on telly.

If you see a Japanese man emulating a British way of life to such an extent as a weeaboo emulates Japanese culture, you would find it funny. This is why it is hilarious/annoying - genuine Japanese people find such blatent emulation of Japanese culture funny, and those who view it from an outside perspective also find it funny.

I'm not trolling you. I find this genuinely interesting. I'm intruiged how you can be so adamant that you are a 'fan' of this culture having never visited, and your opinion being constructed from secondary sources. Just to make it clear, I have been to Japan - so my comments aren't based on suppositions.

What's wrong with that? What else would I base my assumptions on?

Indeed, but I'm not (a complete) idiot, I'm well aware of this point, but I'm hoping that the positive experiences of the trip would make the negative worth putting up with.

And neither will I be going dressed as a Samurai. I certainly won't be pretending to be Japanese any more than the guy in that video, and you wouldn't accuse him of being a weeabo.

I agree. But then I'm not a weeaboo. Or at least I wouldn't consider myself to be one.

It's kind of a snowball effect. I watched a few shows as a kid which led on to anime and Japanese videogames, and through that I got into Japanese music, and movies. More recently I've been watching more regular Japanese TV shows.

The thing is, to truly appreciate the things you're watching you really need at least a basic knowledge of things which are not directly related to pop-culture, such as history, religion etc.

One thing leads to another, and before you know it you have an obsession.

I find it quite odd that she just sits staring at the cam and then looking around - it made me think "What, am I meant to say something to her?!"

Found it a bit creepy.

fus, you mentioned you had been to Japan... I take it you were not hugely impressed then?

Quite the opposite, actually! I thought it was great - though I couldn't live there. I was glad to get away from there, but I would go back if the opportunity arose. It's hard to describe really. When you're there, in my experience, it's totally overwhelming. That's the best word I can use for it. Overwhelming in every sense. Busy, big and bright, though when you leave, it's a case of realising elsewhere is eerily quiet. If you see what I'm saying?

It was a total culture shock, though. If you go to *most* countries, you are able to get by. The typical sense of, say, asking for a beer in a country which doesn't speak English - just say 'BEER!' a bit louder and they get the point. In Japan (not the 'touristy' areas), the lack of English made me feel quite isolated. Asking for any 'home comforts' was an effort and I found myself feeling comfortable in McD's and Pizza Hut - which is not what I wanted from the experience.

Also, the night I spent in a 'capsule hotel' is something I would rather not do again. Imagine spending the night in a microwave and you'll be close! :D
