Largish Family Car - SUV?

to be honest with you I've personally not heard any horror stories with lexus CVT's.. I've driven and known people who have owned some high mile gs450hs, rx400h etc with CVT's and 0 issues.

nissan cube we had was known for CVT problems but again, original box with some servicing at 150k km without issues.

personal view is this :

if you like how it driver, I would completely not worry about the reliability part of CVT's in newer lexus cars, and like @sandys said, there's the 10 year warranty on top

Some of the older Nissans and compatriots had a higher chance of premature failure - but even then many of them went on to 100s of thousands of miles without issue especially if looked after.

I was talking to the service manager in my local Nissan place about it when I bought a Qashqai with CVT and whether it was worth a more regular service schedule on the transmission than standard (keeping in mind that would make them more money) and he said not worth it - in his experience if they are going to go they are going to go and otherwise as long as serviced to the normal standard they just keep on going and they've only had a small number of failures.

Also unsure if it's a bit too small, but the new Toyota Rav4 seems a size bigger than i expected. I always thought it was the same platform as the Lexus NX but it seems bigger.

Could probably get a brand new hybrid one in budget too, and they're doing some pretty good finance deals.

as commented the french started all this (suv's) with espace gene etc. that was the family car in the french car park , or 607's .. vel-satis rip ... Buzz is back on those tracks,
thanks to efficiency of ev's that mass ain't a problem, Paris

No love for a LR defender, or are they daft expensive?
I LOVE the new defender and would love a 110. They are just silly money. I still get my late fathers privilege discount - the 5.0 is "only" 425p vs. 500 odd on the 90 and 130 wheelbase, and £1300/mo with a £5k discount. Doable but not sensible

350hp diesel is £780/mo with a £5k discount so also doable but not sensible. I was so glad to "sans" car payment when the E43 got cleared, so it'd be daft to go back to that situation without good reason.

I’d definitely consider the Mazda cx60. It’s quite a thing.
I do like the look of them - just wasn't sure about drivetrain. They are a bargain compared to the rest on the list. My closest dealer is a Mazda too...

Dunno man, feels a bit meh. Probably tainted because my FIL has one and he's a jerk.

Not a bad shout. Fox has killed the suv for me haha.

You are a smart guy. Large estate is always the best idea. You get a lot more for your money and the loading space is as good if not better than a lot of SUV's.

The benefits of the all road style variants. Especially the A6 Allroad is the 2.5 tonne towing capacity which is huge for a car in that class. The V90 Cross Country is very similar too.

With your budget you are looking at 3 year old Audi's and BMW's but the Volvo you could most likely get something less than a year old direct from a dealer.

If you want something a little smaller then the M340i would basically give you your E43 in estate form although it is a smaller class of car it might be worth a look. Again you are looking at cars around 18-24 months old.
