Laser eye treatment - who's done it?

Well, today is the day. I'm no where near as nervous as I thought I'd be. The appointment is at 11, I'll try and update as the day progresses.

Best of luck, where you getting it done?

Somewhat irritating the pushy manner they seem very good from the literature though but I don't need phoning 3 times in a week just because I wanted to go through their link to get their own brochure

Why would you put your real phone number in. You crazy person.

So it is done!

Appointment was at 11am, I arrived and had to do the reaction blow air tests, again. Then I went upstairs and had some other tests done to confirm my prescription. Usual thing, same as any eye test. Once this was over I was called in by the surgeon. He said I'd probably want my left eye doing in a few months depending on how things go, and also said he's confident the surgery will sort my issues.

I then went through and had the eye drops applied just after laying down on the operating table. I had the suction thing applied, this was pretty unpleasant! It lost suction, so had to have it re-done. Patch over the left eye, I get told to look at a dot and before I know it, I'm told that the first laser is done. So far so good. I then get put under the other one, have to look at an orange dot and then I was told to lie still. The noise of the machine fired up and I'm laid there smelling my eye burning, not such a pleasant experience. This lasted some 10 seconds I think, then they put the flap back on and it was done. You really can't see what is going on, it's just a bunch of blurred dots and you can sense they are doing something, but you can't see any lasers, hands, tools etc.

I stood up, grabbed my things and I was lead into another room where I was told to sit still with my eyes closed. They went though the drops, normal symptoms, not normal symptoms, have me a bag with the drops and that was that, I was free to go. For the next 10-15 minutes I was fine, just blurred vision. My lift picked me up and we got to the M4, shortly after this things started hurting a little! Best way to describe it is when you get sand/dirt in your eye. Constantly. And you can't rub it! So I sat with my eyes closed for the whole journey home and climbed into bed. The next 2-3 hours were probably the most unpleasant of my life. Pretty bad pain and eye watering like hell! I managed to nod off two times but I woke up at 5 ish and applied the drops they gave me and things have been improving since. I think my biggest regret was not having any pain killers in, I think this is essential!

It still feels like sand is in my eye, but vision is improving and it's much better than what it was when I got home.

So far so good I guess.

What was your pescription before?

Last time I looked (boom boom) they said my -7 & -7.5 eyes may still need glasses but that was years ago. Plus my optician told me I have better than 20 20 vision with my lenses in which may mean even though the surgery gives me 20 20 I may still want to wear some sort of correction.

So nothing major, but my right eye is dominant and the astigmatism was giving me headaches. That's what I want fixed, better vision is a bonus.

Be prepared for the yoyo of ups and downs in the coming wks/mths!

Whatever you do stay off Google!

Use the drop liberally and it will be fine.

Yup, going to use them often.

I've a fairly severe astigmatism and eye floaters in both eyes, been checked out umpteen times and its something ill have to deal with, however over the next few months I'm planning on having a consultation to have this done, sick and tired of using toric bi-monthly lenses.

I had great eyesight until a few years ago, then it took a nosedive, using the microscopes at work is just an absolute nightmare.

I was -7.75 in both eyes and they told me the same thing that I may still need glasses. Three years on and I'm still better than 20/20!

The missus went for her consultation yesterday, she is -10.25 and -7.5 and they said it was doable. They said she had quite thick corneas. They quoted her £3100 for it but they quoted me a similar price and soon dropped it when I delayed them.

Well, I was a bit naughty last night. The pain was mostly gone by late afternoon and I felt fine so I had a couple of beers and watched a film. :D

Went to bed at 1am and slept like a log till this morning at around 0630. The goggles they give you were on the floor so I assume I'd taken them off in the night.

I'm becoming a bit of a ninja at putting in the eye drops, I've gone from being pretty squeamish at it to just doing it.

Right eye vision is better, but still not perfect, I think it just needs more time as it's not even been 24 hours since the operation.

Just finished both consultations with Optimax and Optical Express.

£3200 with Optimax and £4300 with OE.

Has anybody had any success with haggling and negotiating prices down?

Some people say that the longer you play the waiting game, the more likely they will offer a steep discount. I also have had some people offer £500 vouchers that they are not likely to use.

The missus was quoted £3180 last Friday. They phoned on Wednesday to say they'll drop it to £2500. She didn't even have to haggle! They did the same to me and I ended up paying about £2300.

£500? Damn, I only get £250 off with my referral. I do get a £50 kick back though.

What treatment is that with OE? I paid £1590 for one eye with them.

OE: Wavefront LASIK was £4300 and regular LASIK was £3900.
Optimax: Wavefront LASIK £3200

I have prescriptions of around -2.25 in both eyes just for ballpark figures. I don't like how each company has given me different prescriptions (OE has detected astigmatism and Optimax didn't), so it's something I would bring up with the surgeon.

Haha! Good to hear. I think it was an old Optimax offer, £500 off for me and £100 for the referral for the other guy. Like you, I only have the £250/£50 vouchers in my aftercare booklet. I don't know if they would honour the £500 referral now that I've done the consultation. The threat of going to OE might do wonders though :D

If Optimax call, I'll just ask them if they wouldn't mind fitting it onto my £2400 credit card and be done with it. In which case I think the next available date is 20 March here in Glasgow.

Just over a week in and everything is fine, still a little dry but sight is brilliant. I do still get a dull ache in my eye but I think it's a combination of post surgery and lots of screen time.

Before if I didn't wear glasses then I'd have to go home by lunch and get them or go to sleep. Haven't worn them since the morning of the op, it's so good to be free.

I had my eyes done with optimax in 2005, I think I paid £2000 to get both eyes done, I found that after my eyes were healing but my right eye wasn't as good as my left, I though it was fine but they re-did my right at no extra cost and both were perfect after that. I did notice my eyes felt strained for awhile afterward but realised it's probably because when I wore glasses I wouldn't really look left or right as I couldn't focus properly so would turn me head instead so my eyes need time to adjust. I would have it done again if needed.

Has anyone had experience with Advanced Vision Care in London? I'm looking into booking with them but was wondering if anyone here has had their eyes done with them, the cost is £2400 per eye which seems a bit over average, but it's a constant cost and don't hassle you to pick up all these extra's like some others seem to do.

Also, if someone would like to do a referral with me for AVC let me know.

Uh oh, first post in this thread. I've been considering surgery for a while now. Having had a friend (and friends of friends) done it without any issues and proclaiming it's the best thing they've ever done.. I think it's time I get myself down to a few clinics and see what's what.

So, I'm in London right next door to a Optical Express. Is that a good place to start? What about the others? What are the top-rated places in London?

I take it the iLasik (intralase) is the top-notch treatment nowadays? Thanks.
