But a dirty beach impacts us now. What happened 2, 3, 4 or even 500 years ago to someone else doesn't.

It's the effort i am respecting. If someone feels their family benefitted from something they're uneasy with and want to try and at least make an effort, even if it is for their own peace of mind, I respect that they're actually doing something about it.

I'm not trying to suggest that everyone goes out and does the same or that it's the right thing to do. I just respect what she's done.

But their feelings may be from a completely misguided point of view.
As I said to NVP, those often screaming out for 'reparations' have often benefitted massively from the misfortune of their ancestors. They simply wouldn't have the good lives they do now. These people do not need or deserve a penny. That money can go to much better things like ensuring that crap is wiped out and never happens again (yes, slavery is still a problem throughout the world).

But who are you to tell them that? It's like telling someone which charitable causes they should believe in. As far as she is concerned, her family benefitted from the trade and she wants to go some way to try and do some good, even if her perception doesn't align with yours.

She hasn't hurt anyone. As long as it is an individuals action and not an action taken out of the hands of the individual, I.E through Tax, then I don't see the problem with what she has done.

But people are demanding individual actions. People are demanding payment through things such as mass taxation.

She hasn't just come up with her decisions in a vacuum, she has been influenced. Who gives anyone the right to influence her choices? Particularly when many of those influences are selfish/malign as is apparent from the whole discussion on payment for ones ancestors.

I mentioned it earlier but say you found out your grandad had robbed my grandma, would you be scrabbling to pay me back? Should I be demanding you pay me? Should a societal group be demanding you pay me?

The other question is, why now? Does it stop? Do your children have to pay mine too? Or do their children have to pay my grandchildren?

If she wants to use her own money then fine, she's the living embodiment of the 'white guilt' though

And yet she's calling for the British government to cough up some cash and pay "Last week I left the BBC, after a 30-year career, which was a joy and a privilege, to campaign for reparative justice full-time and encourage Britain to face up to its colonial debt". Who would ultimately pay for her (and those like her) demands?

People can demand whatever they want. Doesn't mean they'll get it.

Someone doesn't like something and decided to do something about it. Good on them. That doesn't mean everyone else needs to follow suit nor should they be expected to. But if someone who clearly has benefitted from it decides to pay something back, more power to them. Especially seeing as it's a choice. As long as people aren't forced to do it, I don't see the harm.

You're going to have some black people who think everything should be owed to them then you're going to have some white people who think the blacks should count themselves lucky they're allowed to breathe and everything i between both extremes on the spectrum.

This is something very few will ever agree on. My stance is and always will be it's ridiculous to force individual people to make amends for something they didn't do (same way I find the apologies hollow because you can't really truly apologise for something you didn't directly do) but if an individual decides they want to do something by choice. It's not an issue.

But it is an issue if they're being pushed in to it or acting from a position of poor education.
It's exactly the same as vulnerable older people who have someone take advantage of them resulting in a change to the persons will or even direct benefit there and then.
Like I said, these decisions are not reached in a vacuum. There are outside influences, many of which do not come from honest/good places.

She's a bit cheap as well isn't she, her family received around 3 million (in today's money) and yet only 100k has been given. If she was really serious/apologetic then why not the full amount?

Who pushed her? She looked into her family history and decided she didn't like something and decided to try and do something about it to help the island her family may have impacted negatively.

Who gets to decide if it's right or wrong? You and her clearly have different perspectives on it. Perhaps your family had nothing to do with the trade so that is why you have the stance you do. If you feel your family did benefit from it and it didn't sit right with you, why shouldn't you do something about it if you could?

I don't know who pushed her. Do you know someone didn't? Do you know that she hasn't seen the constant media narrative at the minute?

Everyone gets to decide if something is right or wrong. Everyone is entitled to an opinion on it. The majority concensus often wins. Sometimes its the ones who scream the loudest.

It will end up a problem and later on hurt many people.

if everyone was as logical as Junglist then the whole "issue" would be in a better place for sure.

I can guarantee you her family treated the poor British just as bad in the UK. I do not see her saying "sorry" and finding the British families her family abused.
The point is it has happened, it was a long time ago, nothing to do with us.

Logic will often go out the window when 'social justice' is involved.
Absolutely and that is why the whole issue is just/usually a complete nightmare can of worms toxic mess.
Its not fixable and making money to line the pockets of "next interest group" solves nothing.
Its history, its how it was, it was bad by modern standards and in some respects it brought other positives.

said from a position of white privilege :P im joking thats also utter nonsense.

As a fully paid up member of the black delegation I take this quote as admittance of guilt and expect repatriations to be completed via BACS payment with a term of 24 days.
