Leaving plugs on, is it bad?

I think i know why mine stays on.

I have to keep on putting quids in to get electricity, when the flat was for Holidays instead of a short hold tenency the owner would put a padlock on the fuse box to stop you from using the same quid over and over.

Im guessing once the quids run out on the timer the fridge stays on as it needs too.

Mate you should rewire all your stuff to the fridge circuit, no more paying for electricity. :p

I only turn stuff off at the plug if I'm going away for few days or more, I just can't be arsed to climb under my desk to turn the pc on every day.

Or i just go up to the Switch Box and turn the Big one off!

Not good if you have central heating that requires power.. you might come home to burst pipes from the cold.

My dad has always made us turn plugs off at night or when we're not using them, and even take them out of the wall. He said it's something to do with how easy things can go on fire so i've always done this. I even feel uncomfortable going to sleep when I know something like my phone is on charge or the computer is on downloading or charging my Ipod.

As unlikely as it is with most modern equiptment, fire safety is the main reason I switch things off.

I don't leave things on standby or leave chargers plugged in but i don't turn all things off at the plug. I don't see the point, my housemate does it and it annoys me for some reason lol!

why would you turn the sockets off, what a pain in the ass. Besides, my laptop wont be very efficient at downloading overnight if it is turned off. My hifi amp wont stay warm when its off. My television wont wake me up in the morning with breakfast on bbc1 if it is unplugged. I'm as tight as they come, but there are limits. I do my bit by always shutting lights off when leaving a room, but maybe i should quit doing that too, seems the bulbs blow pretty frequently when you turn them on and off all the time, and every time a bulb blows it blows the whole lighting circuit, most annoying.

My dad makes us turn the TV off at the wall and I have never really sen the point myself, but he seems to know what he is doing when it comes to electricity so I guess it must be worth it

Hmm, that would explain that dried white stuff on the carpet near my computer then! :D
Eww xD

Personally the only time stuff gets turned off at the wall is when i go on holiday.

anyone know what the deal is with light bulbs, is it better to keep on switching it off when i leave the room, or does it use less electricity if i keep it on.

Radio stations are always rallying the public to switch off lights....

As far as im aware a standard filament bulb doesnt draw any extra power when turned on. Flourescent tubes however do, i believe it is more efficient to turn it off if you aren't going to be turning it on again within the next 30 mins ish.

That sounds a bit stupid. Source?

sorry, but hes right, with in the sense of computers, if you turn them off, you should wait at least 30 seconds before you turn it back on again, and everytime you turn it on, high electricity is trying to flow extremely quickly, hence the "surging"
another way of looking at it, is buying an extension lead with a power indicator, when you turn everything on, you will see it rise very high levels at the point you swich one, this is the "surge" he is on about.
