Legal aid should not fund asylum legal action.

So you're saying it's more prevalent in poorer, more built up areas of Oldham right, or are you blaming Pakistani people for being solely responsible for the spread?

Er how well do you know Oldham? Given that I have lived here for 34 of my 38 years including spending over a year living near to Alexandra Park and having spent a large amount of time fishing there when I was a youth i would like to think I have quite a good idea of which areas are more culturally diverse than others.

That's the 2 places I was mentioning in my post.

It's not just poor areas as there are white poor areas in Oldham that don't have it that high. It's the Pakistani and Bangladeshi community in those areas. I know this because I talk to many members of those communities who say themselves others aren't complying with the rules when it comes to social gatherings.

It is amazing the lengths the council is going to so it doesn't have to impose a lockdown. After the emails, leaflets, personally addressed house letters, we've now got James Cosmo doing a video message.

Yeah i used to live on Cleeve Road in Glodwick just off Lees Road. I know exactly what the area is like and I know the lockdown rules are being flagrantly ignored, especially over Eid.

But then the majority of new cases in oldham hospital are culturally diverse patients, but hey it is what it is, lets all go celebrate the birthday of Pakistan!

The reason is stupidity. You have to be a completely idiotic human being to go around spreading Covid. You don't have to be poor or rich, ethnic or white to be an idiot, even poor ethnic people can isolate themselves from other family members. But they have the highest rate of infections at the moment, so it must mean that they are particularly stupid or just plan arrogant.

Maybe not enough adverts on TV about the dangers of covid

Or maybe not enough adverts in Urdu, though I suspect local councillors made sure that the message was available in bi lingual material.

There can be countless reasons why they chose to do this but ultimately it boils down to the fact that they are after the best for themselves. Is it really such an abomination for anyone to want that? Note - this isn’t saying things should go unchecked or be ‘unlimited’. Rather, do remember they are humans with very little that are looking out for number 1.
Best for themselves? The human traffickers in these countries must be having such a laugh. You pay me loads of the local currency, I'll put you in a barely seaworthy vehicle, float you out into the Med and the NGOs and navys of these western countries pick you up! The smugglers must be having an absolute laugh! They do the bloody hard part for them. It'd be like the US border control reinforcing the tunnels under the Mexico border for the smugglers and drug mules! It's utter lunacy. Australia took a hard stance, guess what? Less crossings, less drownings! Amazing! We're a soft soft touch.

Also I find it hilarious that you came in here to stand on your high horse and say "You should all be ashamed, feel some compassion for these people coming from war torn countries "

And when it turns out that's ridiculous unless you believe they really set off from the North African Coast to land in Kent originally (you know, not choosing to land in Cornwall and ignoring Italy, France and Spain on the way), and just felt like a pit stop in Calais first...

I have no compassion for beggars being choosers. And like I said before I'm not being apologetic about it. Assisting these people on their routes is funding human trafficking and encouraging more of this behaviour which results in more people drowning. Where's your compassion now?

Re-read my post. I never said they were all from war torn countries - I said that they were after the best for themselves and that is not an abominable thing.

I don’t think the rest of your post addresses anything I said either - unless you are saying that providing legal aid to those claiming asylum is funding human trafficking, which is a little daft because it’s clearly not funding it (at the very most it could be said to incentivise being subject to trafficking and even that would be a little tedious).

I've mostly given up on reading threads like this and I probably should do so for good. It just gives me that unpleasant feeling of being a bystander watching something unsavoury going on.

People seemingly really dislike the idea of being "taken advantage of" by foreigners, disproportionately so to the extent that they lose their compassion entirely. It's really quite ugly.

They're not claiming asylum. If you are an Asylum Seeker, you are seeking asylum, if you are a refugee you are seeking refuge. These people are foregoing Asylum and Refuge in Italy and Germany and France. So is Asylum and Refuge really what they are seeking? Yes funding anything that aids illegal migration gives incentive and aids human traffickers and modern slavery. You would be an absolute fool if you don't see that.

Why wouldn't you dislike being taken advantage of? What kind of an argument is that. You just want to be high and mighty and to appear righteous. If as you originally put in your first post in this thread that you hate the sight of these threads and it gives you an unpleasant feeling and is quite ugly. Then why would you post in it and also tell everyone how you feel about it, if it really made you feel the way it did surely you'd just move along and read something else. You're basically just saying "Hey everyone look at me and how high up my horse is!". And I'm not just singling you out here, lots of people do this.

I’m posting to express my disagreement with the sentiment that those people coming here illegally deserve zero compassion.

Equally they shouldn't be treated to a a naval or coast guard escort service, free food, 3 or 4 star hotel accommodation, free legal representation.

If they can't afford to support themselves with the basics then I dont think they should be paying fir transport here.

Fair enough, and I apologise for the tone of my previous post. But I don't feel any compassion personally to people who make one perilous journey over the med, refuse to apply for refuge or asylum in Greece or Italy. And willfully choose to make even more dangerous journeys to get here. Sorry but I don't. I do for the ones who claim in Italy or Greece, and like I've said before if any of our neighbours had wars and people applied here I'd have compassion for them too. They're choosing where they want to go, which if you're claiming to be a refugee or asylum seeker to me seems wrong. Especially considering people who want to come to this country legally have to go through so many hoops (non EU that is).
