Lenovo Legion 5 Pro

Why are people so bothered by the RAM?

Apparently it’s only really noticeable to performance at FHD, but the display is QHD+, so as long as you play native res you shouldn’t have much of an issue.

I dont think there are any single rank 16GB sodimms. Maybe check with CPU-Z.
Unfortunately CPU-Z is no help as the SPD tab is completely blank. I made sure I had the latest version - 1.96.1 - but it was no different from 1.96.0.

Have you made any progress finding your missing one yet?

No Lenovo are hopeless. Won't replace it until UPS have completed their lost parcel investigation which can take a couple of weeks (UPS emailed me to double check I definitely hadn't received it yesterday ).

Not a great experience so far.

In very simplistic terms, a better CPU, GPU or disk drive will give higher scores. For comparison, the i7-9700F in my desktop PC scores about 14,000; the GTX 1660 Ti scores about 11,000 and the Samsung 970 Evo scores about 15,000.
I recommend downloading the test suite from the Passmark web site as some of it is quite entertaining to watch and you will learn if there are potential bottlenecks in your system.

Thanks for the reply

I use my computers for prouductivity workloads and virtual reality. I am often bottlenecked by CPU/RAM rather than GPU. 10% better FPS in high FPS virtual reality can make the difference between no reprojection and always reprojection, and RAM speeds can make a difference to stuff like motion graphics and photoshop.

Anyone use a cooling pad for their laptop? (recommendations?) Or are they considered pointless?

I have noticed (and rightly so) when the laptop is raised off the table my temps do go down, hoping getting a stand with a fan pushing air up may drop temps further, hopefully not having the laptop fans ramp up so hard.

@Uncle_Gravy

I think you should be good just lifting laptop or getting a stand.

I’ve tried cooling pads and I’ve not noticed any improvement over just raising the back of the laptop/ using a laptop stand that exposes the underside of the laptop.

I have to say that I am very impressed with the performance of the 3070 in these laptops. I ended up keeping the legion 7 but the pro 5 will be the same performance. Even on performance mode they are very quiet. I understand the pro is even quieter than the 7. My last gaming laptop was a alienwear 15r3 with a 1070 and that is very loud.

The screen on the levanos is amazing. I was playing ori on it was just breathtaking

I don't think there are any current laptops that compete with the legion models

+1

I went nuts just to see what difference it would make and bought a laptop stand (with fan) and two exhaust fans. They made no difference over simply keeping the vents raised off the table, which is what I now do.

Repasting is often worth it, and I've done that on Rigs 2 and 3 in sig but for some reason can't be bothered with Rig1! Probably because I'm not thermally limited as much on the AMD as the Intel. None of them are thermally limited on the GPU.

So I picked up a cheap cooling pad that had two fans, I’m not sure if it was the fact the laptop was raised up or more cool air from the fans getting to it but I never saw the cpu go above 70c which it always did when I had it on a table and the fans sounding like a jet taking off, so I’m happy with that.

next I need to add another nvme drive into it, and possibly maybe upgrade the ram since I do have the non pro FHD 3070 model and there have been a few games that don’t hit the 165hz refresh rate, not like 130fps on high/ultra is to be upset about :)

An update for people who have ordered the 5 pro and are waiting. I ordered mine at the beggining of June and a couple of days ago recieved an email saying there is a lack of components and my expected delivery is 31/08/2021 which is pretty much september!

I just recieved another email today saying "we were able to expedite it’s fulfilment" and the new delivery date is 30/06/21 which is in 1 week. So if you recieve the later email, have patience, I guess lenovo also have no idea when they can get parts so the September delivery date is just an estimate until they do. Hope this helps some of you that have worried you will have to wait 3 months to get it :)

So I upgraded mine with 32GB of Crucial Ballistix 3200 ram, but made the schoolboy mistake of not factoring in the ability to enable XMP. So the ram is currently running at 1332Mhz/2667.

How much difference will this be making? Have I made it worse than with the stock ram or will the tighter timings make up for it? The timings are showing as 19-19-19-43 but must admit to being a little confused.

Should I just reorder a new kit or is it not really worth it?
