LG 34GK950G, 3440x1440, G-Sync, 120Hz

Yes I am. No harm don’t worry, although I was tempted to ban you from here for the comment you made :p haha only kidding

I don't think any of us normal forum members have seen actual specs for the G-Sync module (I assume Nvidia keep details behind closed doors), but Daniel has said that the module needs to be overclocked to achieve 120Hz (quoted his post below).
Ok thanks. I couldn’t see where that had stemmed from originally. I will speak with LG and NVIDIA about it a bit further as I get in to doing the reviews in near future

Thanks a ton! In your review is there any stress tests you can do to see if the overclock deteriorates over time? as in it develops flicker, panel uniformity issues or doesn't hit 120hz.

Ive seen a lot of reports of this type of thing happening on the Dell after a month or two or being OCed to 120hz

I can’t think of any logical tests given the relatively short amount of time I will have the screen other than testing it works during my usage and for some specific tests. Not really any way to tell how it would behave over time but then anything like that would be covered by the provided warranty

Hi guys, im also was waiting for LG 34GK950G, but really cant wait more longer with my poor 60hz normal monitor,
so i pulled the trigger and bought AW3418DW, and IMHO with some OSD adjustments, its amazing monitor, zero dead pixel, very small bleeding even in the dark, either im very lucky or i got perfect monitor,
with the very fast progress in pc hardware, waiting is really waste of time, just buy and enjoy, its just me.

Sort of annoyed at Nvidia as reading through this thread it's clear that LG wanted to run UW-QHD at 144Hz with Gsync. No one can yet say why the 1.2 module is so limited in this case. But, Nvidia is really pushing forward into the future with their new GPU's and Gsync HDR to improve the overall gaming experience. Can't blame them for that approach as current rasterization is pretty much at its peak. Pairing a PG279Q with a 1080Ti is the end state of current PC gaming. I'm also sure the mining craze had something to do with Nvidia's new direction.

Now, this leaves some consumers in a strange place. For this thread, I'm not sold on the LG product mainly because DP 1.2 has had its day. Nvidia and others are moving on. But, there's also no additional gaming-related offerings from the 34GK beyond the PG279Q aside from the UW format/resolution. And for that, we already have the AW34 and the X34p. I realize a potential +20Hz stability is a good deal for some and believe me, the adult style of the 34GK is a very welcome alternative. However, it seems to me that the 34GK is being released just as the old era of PC gaming is coming to a close. This may be fine for those who recently purchased a 10 series Nvidia card and plan to ride it for several more years, but that plan in and of itself with the advent of RTX does not seem wise to me if newer games are wished to be played.

So if I wanted to maximize my RTX card and Nvidia's Gsync HDR technologies, I have the options of getting a PG27UQ / X27 or the new corresponding UW products in those lineups when released. I would certainly go with the 4K HDR models if the prices came down a bit, but for now both sets of options are either actually expensive or rumored to be so. Plus, VA panels on the UW's do not sound exciting to me at all. The whole reason I would pay for Gsync is to eliminate artifacts during gameplay. VA defeats that purpose altogether by introducing its own set of blemishes. I am also very sensitive to viewing angle contrast shift.

The 34GK seems like a transitional product, bridging the gap between 1440p/165Hz and 4K/120Hz HDR with a solid middle ground offering that boosts color accuracy. There's probably a really solid market for that as users hold on to the 10 series cards.

I think I shot myself in the budgetary foot when I bit on the RTX GPU's. I'll most likely have to shell out for the ROG/Predator lineup.

I think its very clearly a transitional product as the entire panel industry (AUO, Samsung, LG...) has just started dipping their toes into the HDR world and it will likely be at least another year before quality, *real* HDR panels (ie HDR10 class) start becoming prevalent from multiple manufacturers. The fact of the matter is that HDR on the desktop is in its early infancy and if that quality HDR is important to you, well, you're going to be waiting probably 12-18 months before there is a decent selection of quality HDR panels.

Me? My priority is getting off this 60hz, 1080P monitor. The most important things for me right now are high refresh (>100hz) and UWD resolution. Quality HDR, while nice to have is a distant third, and something I can certainly live without for the next 2+ years. Once there are established UWD+, 144hz, micro-led or better, HDR10, IPS panels from vendors I'll re-evaluate, but that's a ways away.

I got the AW3418DW not long ago but returned it and got the AW3418HW because everything looked to small for me at 1440p and + 1080p is easier to drive and panel can oc to 160hz

for me its ok the small icons or text, coz its mainly gaming monitor, also i can make them bigger from control panel settings,
besides 2650x1080 @34" you get 84 ppi which makes pixels little bit stretch, unlike 3440x1440 will give you 110 ppi which is acceptable for @34" monitor.
I have GTX1080 TI and i can easily max all games with almost constant 120hz, except crysis 3.

You’re likely looking at a few years before monitors can match PQ of current high end TV’s. It’s sadly not a priority for the user base or and manufacturers.

My dell 3008wfp is still decent so the main upgrade would be a faster panel at this stage.

As for HDR, probably the biggest jump in PQ since we moved to 1080p Blu-ray from DVD but the current state of HDR on PC monitors and gaming is poor and what’s being passed off as HDR displays is just preying on uninformed consumers.

If LG would make a 40inch OLED, I’d find a way to make it work on my desk and avoid wasting money on “gaming monitors.”

I love your work :) Can't wait for the TFT Central LG 34GK950G / F review. Please include the Blur Reduction brightness comparison table!

I think you guys are right. Of all features HDR seems to be the one to compromise on at the moment. Just realized that I will likely have to absorb a performance hit with ray tracing enabled. Got to pick the priorities. Overpaying for a PG27UQ and then only being able to run in an upscaled resolution is out of whack and a very poor value.
