LG 38GN950-B

Hey guys, I just got a GN, coming from a GL cuz I hate the fan noise, I’m very glad with the silent performance of this one, but, I’m surprised no one mentioned it yet, the first thing I noticed once I booted up some high paced games is the ghosting, after 15min of AC Odyssey I even felt kind of dizzy, I don’t know if it’s the lack of variable overdrive (game was running at 50-60 fps) or I had a bad unit...how are your experiences with this panel?
Should I return it and try to get another panel? Or simply it lucks the fast variable overdrive from the GL and results in that ghosting?

Strange, I didn't notice any ghosting wile gaming with mine yesterday with my 5700 XT.

How is your screen set in terms of refresh rate / overdrive? Was running mine at 144Hz 8 bit color full RGB with overdrive setting to Fast.

I have exactly the same. The ghosting when the fps is lower than the max refresh rate of this panel is really painful...I did not expect that for real.

Are you guys using Nvidia cards and so G-sync? If so maybe it relates to some G-sync specific settings?

Really on my end with the 5700 XT and so Freesync everything was butter smooth.

GTX1080, running at 120Hz + 10bit colour; no issues with ghosting here.

Edit: adaptive-Sync on, overdrive set to Fast

Another thing i noticed, the black levels are trash, if u go to lagom black level test, everything below 5 is crushed....i did not had this with my GL monitor. This is with Gamer1 profile and Gamma mode 1. If u enable Gamer2 profile, or you raise the black stabilizer beyond 50... the whole gamma just goes nuts and its pointless, everything becomes overexposed.

I dont know if its me...but this monitor is far from usable at this black levels. Is this a bad unit? or you also experienced this?

Hey Guys, new member here. I recently purchased a new RTX 3090 along with a new desktop build. Won’t be here til early December ... I’m also in the market for a monitor. After hours and hours of research and limited options I think I’ve decided to go with the lg38gn950. Keep in mind I’m a brand new pc gamer. Previously a casual/hardcore console player. My question to you guys may seem stupid but I need to know and cannot find an exact answer anywhere. WILL I BE ABLE TO USE HDR600 while using gsync compatability?? Again I’ve done tons of research and would like to just get a gsync ultimate monitor but they’re so hard to get ahold of and are a premium price. Lmk thanks guys

Yes it is gsync compatible whilst using HDR600. You can only have a Gsync ultimate designation if you have minimum HDR 1000 and a G-sync module. This monitor does not have a G-sync module (so no annoying fan noise) but is G-sync compatible.

@Tyson Overcash Yes, it can:

The max refresh with HDR 10 bit colour enabled is limited to 120Hz; while not the fastest this monitor can refresh, it's high enough that G-Sync compatible / Adaptive Sync LFC kicks in to enable smooth motion should your frame rate dip below 48fps.

This monitor excels at many things; it's plenty bright and vivid in SDR but if you were to compare it against OLED you'll find HDR600 really pales in comparison. Basically, it's decent for games with bright daytime scenes. IPS glow is more noticeable when you enable HDR, so it's a bit pants for night-time scenes. Ultimately, every display technology has it's strengths and weakness; HDR is not an IPS monitor's strong point. IMHO Windows HDR implementation isn't great either, it comes across as an after thought.

So you’re saying with the 38gn950 and an rtx 3090 I can run gsync on it @ 4k settings with HDR600 on up to 120fps in most modern shooters for example? Or if I wanted to hit these marks would I be better off going with the 38GL950@ HDR400 4K to get up to 120FPS? Forgive me and my knowledge on this lol. I’m a PC newbie

Both GN / GL are equally capable at handling 120Hz and above. Its all down to your RTX 3090 GPU as to how many frames it can push out (and therefore determining at which refresh your monitor uses). If you enable HDR 10bit you reach the max limit of what DisplayPort 1.4 is capable of at 120Hz @ 3840x1600p. If anything will get you to 120fps (and above in SDR) you have to imagine that a 3090 will!

Neither model supports Hdmi 2.1 so you'll want to connect it to your PC using the DisplayPort.

While you can connect a next gen console to it over Hdmi 2.0 you won't be able to take advantage of adaptive sync; also you will have big black bars to the left and right due to the fact the screen is approx. 21:9 ultra wide and the console outputs 16:9.

What is SDR? Am I still gonna get good color in SDR on either model? Also is 4k gonna be on in SDR mode?

BTW thank you guys again for helping me decide

oh one last thing on the ps5 side of things and this monitor... can I run 4k 60fps with VRR or adaptive sync turned on?

This display has some of the best response times, either yours is faulty, or you're observing some other issue.

Use the sRGB mode to properly clamp the values for SDR viewing. And set brightness appropriate for your conditions (~10-30) [or calibrate properly with a colorimeter]

There is no need to drop down to 120hz for HDR, @144hz+ When HDR triggers (in Windows or via game) Windows will kick it down to 8-bit with dithering which should be imperceptibly different from 10-bit. (in summary, 160hz HDR is fine)
That said, without proper local dimming, IPS is terrible for HDR. HDR games with minimal darkness will look great (Hitman, Forza) While dark ones will be frustratingly glowy since the local dimming on this is useless (Doom, Observer)

Disregarding professional work, Im not sure why everyone is gung-ho about running 10-bit, AFAIK, Alien Isolation is the only game that will take advantage of the additional color depth. However I am not a color scientist and may have something here wrong.

Just got my 38WN95C, which is the same panel but with Thunderbolt and no RGB bling.

Trying to wallmount it, but seriously what is LG thinking placing the connectors like this? At least the powercable is angled, but the included Displayport cable and Thunderbolt cable? This is ridiculous. Who at LG thought this was great design for a 1500£ monitor??

Anyone know where to buy an angled Displayport 1.4 cable?
