LG 48CX OLED - 4K 120 Hz

Check Stardock Fences.
Can organise your icons on desktop by puting them in fences and than has option you need to quickly hide icons by double clicking any blank space on desktop. Double click again and icons are back

This is fantastic, super useful program - thank you mate.

I find 80 too bright even, I'm currently at 60 OLED light.

Also strongly agree with turning HDR off in windows, because it is blindingly bright (at least to me) - although it does look stunning. I've also changed to 4K 60Hz RGB full from 4K 120Hz 4:2:0 subsampling limited - I'll miss 120Hz a little undoubtedly, but the colours, text, and general desktop use experience is just garbage without full RGB. Happy to use 60Hz for a little longer.

I must admit I sit far away on my setting OLED light @80 when I play allots of HDR games in PC mode, and when I am not playing games my OLED light is just 50 plus I don't use Windows HDR my GPU is two years old but I can play all the newer games and will not rush out and buy the RTX3080/90 just because I have an new CX55 OLED I will wait for the next gen 4080/90,

I have seen allots of people rushing to buy the new GPU 3080/90 but they can't run it @PCIE 4.0 only PCIE3.0 so they lose the doubled the bandwidth that a PCIE4.0, the CPU that supports PCI4.0 is the Intel Rocket Lake but that CPU will be released in Q1 -2021 unless they have AMD

Anyone experience a smell coming out of the back of the TV?

My new 48CX has it - seen posts elsewhere that it may go away after a week or two, or that the PSU may need to be replaced. Shame as it's otherwise a perfect panel.
Define smell? Interestingly I was fiddling around near mine and had a bit of a whiff, can’t really define the exact smell and it wasn’t exactly strong, had to be quite close.

Hot/burning plastic smell. Will give it a week or so before I decide whether to exchange it.

Few guys over at avforums had the same issue, some said the smell went others said it never went after a few days so just exchanged it.

One of those things guess one has to wait and see, you have removed the plastic from the back of the TV near the top left and right sides ?

if I scroll down the list I have the option of 4k 120hz under the pc resolutions, I click apply and you get the 15 seconds to say yes or no to the changes. Click yes and it immediately just reverts to the tv 4k 60 option.

From my experience that could mean the cable is not up to standard, you have to remember half these hdmi cables make bold claims or claim they support 4k or 120hertz, usually most of them are not certified due to fees, so they claim it anyhow and sell it.

Has the same issue many times.

Which hdmi cable make and model is it ?

Also have you set the LG hdmi port to PC device type in the Lg dashboard settings screen ? Has HDMI ultra deep colour been enabled under additional picture settings ?

Make sure your LG is updated to the latest firmware the one with better hdmi 2.1 device support think its 3.11.25

Worth trying the above, if it does not work try setting up PC device on another hdmi port or all of them to double check.

If possible find the thickest shortest hdmi cable (if spare one possible) or try all the other hmdi cables if you got them spare also.

I personally have found Ibra cables to hit there quoted specs most of the time, type ibra 8k on rainforest I think with the discount its about 13 quid

Surprisingly, boot up tonight and give it one last try... and it works, but only on YCbCr420 mode. Will use that for now on any games I can push at 4k 120, and then switch back to rgb full 60 hz for others :)

Yep. No plastic film on the sides.

Sounds more and more like the hdmi cable cant cut it sadly, when you go to a lesser option or something that is not too demanding and it works gut says its incompatible sadly.

Yep. To be fair on a £13 5m cable I’m pretty happy to get 120hz at all. The price really jumps up over 5m (and I actually need 6/7m, I’ve added a 1m extender at moment) .. even then the reviews say some can’t hack it so I’ll wait till the kinks are ironed out then stump for a decent one.

How is the experience with this for office/productivity work?

I have a hell of a lot more screen real estate at 4K than I did on my 34" 3440x1440 ultrawide, so that's a plus. Tex is clear and sharp, so no issues there either. Otherwise it's just like any monitor, 120Hz or colour saturation etc doesn't really benefit so much. I've noticed that when reading a PDF for a while, having a word doc or spreadsheet open for a long time the TV automatically dims that area to reduce burn in risk. It's one of those things that when you're focused on the task you don't even notice it, only when you look away and back do you see it's not bright white anymore. But I've got no issue with that feature.

It's lovely to use Adobe Lightrooms on as well, but I don't have any of this professional calibration tools etc so I couldn't tell you how colour accurate it is. By eye though it seems fantastic, and the perfect blacks and infinite contrast really help when it comes to doing tone curves.

ahh at 7 metres it's going to be tricky especially when you want that 120hertz, RGB, 10bit etc, Fiber optic hdmi cables may be the ticket or a good hdmi extender with separate power may work but hear they are glitchy sometimes.

There is a conway 8k fiber optic cable around £90-100 and also RUIPRO 8k fiber optic for £175 on rainforest, I have tried the conway 8k one but no joy with that one, it cut out on me with trying 4K, 60hertz and 8bit-RGB.

The ibrah 4K fiber optic cable that was tad iffy for few minutes but then kicked in and works faultless now but the real test will be if it can handle 120 hertz @ 8k with 10bit/RGB :) If it doesn't ill probably have to try the RUIPRO 8K cable.

I know it sucks hard when you want that 7 metre length run, try a 15-metre run ;)

I'm just about to pull the trigger finally. Yesterday, I returned a Samsung Odyssey 32" g7 gaming monitor. What a load of overrated garbage! I will let you know as to whether the oled is color accurate or not. I do a lot of product photography and have calibrated professional monitors here that will sit either side of the oled. The product pictures I take here in the studio have to be exact to real life colors. These products are fashion leathers, and I can tell immediately if they differ in color when viewed on a monitor. To tell you the truth, I am not expecting the Oled to be color accurate which, would equal the equivalent of 100% sRGB. As for the screen dimming with the Oled, that may actually NOT be a bad thing. Proper sRGB is quite dim. Professional monitors also have varying degrees of blue light filter modes, which make the screen have a pleasant yellowish tint for extended use. Professional monitors are ALL very dim after calibration anyway.

I am slightly deficient when it comes to HDMI cables because I am familiar with display port cables. Can someone recommend an HDMI cable? Do i get a 2.0 or 2.1? My graphics cards are still the GTX 2080 series. I am not sure if Big Navi will work with this TV but have my eyes set on that RTX 6800 XT.

- Also could someone please confirm the following :
Is it feasible to play games at 1440p @ 120hz on this tv? How does 1440p look on a windowed screen (reduced size)? I currently play 1440p on my 32" professional monitors @75hz. Quite frankly, there is not much difference between 75hz and 144hz. Yes 144hz is slightly smoother, but the difference is mostly pshycological.

-So for normal desktop work on the OLED, it's better to be full RGB at 60hz. Is this correct?

-Has anyone tried that chroma sub sampling stuff, so as to get the 120hz all the time? How does that look?

White uniformity (blue and yellow all over) might drive you nuts - it is me.

What do you mean? Whites on a professional monitor showing proper sRGB are slightly yellowish anyway. Whites on most gaming monitors on standard mode are more blue. All this can be adjusted in the Nvidia control panel or in the rgb section. For monitors that do not emulate sRGB properly (ALL gaming monitors) I use RED 48 GREEN 46 BLUE 32, to do desktop work. Set the brightness to 40, and contrast to 55. This gets me closest to sRGB. Then you have other problems such as "magenta push", most gaming monitors are "off" on the reds (they contain too much magenta tone) and are "off" on the greens. This you can't correct. It's their nature. Whilst gaming monitors may have superb colors in games, they are not color accurate when it come down to color critical work.

I got the TrueHQ 2m HDMI 2.1 cable on the rainforest (£17.99), works perfectly. I only have an RTX 2080 too, but I plan to upgrade to an HDMI 2.1 card soon. Big Navi is HDMI 2.1 capable, so a 6800XT will work fine.

Yes

Just like having an ultrawide, except with better contrast and picture quality. I suppose you could stretch the 1440p to the whole window, but I prefer to have black bars .

I dislike the way 4:2:0 chroma subsampling makes text look, so I go with full RGB at 60hz for desktop usage.

-Has anyone tried that chroma sub sampling stuff, so as to get the 120hz all the time? How does that look?

I tried it, didn't like the way text and other elements of the desktop experienced looked. At the moment for gaming I'm playing Red Dead Redemption 2 at fairly ultra settings, so I don't get more than 60fps anyway. But again, once I upgrade to an HDMI 2.1 card I'll be able to run full RGB 444 4K @ 120hz.
