LG c9 OLED

I just bought a 65" C9 this weekend coming from a ~2013 Samsung 46" ES7000 is seems quite a step up and might give you an idea as to the level I am used to, no sound systems for me I just use the TV or headphones, I went OLED for improved viewing angles and might do some gaming, I am finding the sound pretty good on the whole, the faux 3dness can be impressive but can also be really bad on some services which carry old programs like Amazon Video and it can get the sound quite wrong loosing voices in the overlaid music, in this case I just disable it.

For me coming from something quite old comparatively, I feel it has very good sound, more than I need, and doesn't need a soundbar, in fact the whole screen is more than I need, I should probably have bought 55”, 65” is a massive increase, didn’t look so bad in the shops :D I am sure it’ll be fine on a lower TV cabinet, so need to find a lower (perhaps 45-60cm) and longer (2m) unit, is there a cabinet thread :D

We She wanted to get a 55" whereas I've been pushing for the 65". We were thinking of getting a Sonos soundbar but with a bit of Man-Math (and wishful thinking a certain promotion will still be running) I figured that if the TV sound is better than what we are used to (a Samsung 40" 4K screen from 2016) I could make the angle that we don't need to spend the extra on a soundbar and we should get a larger screen. We just got back from John Lewis and I think I've won the battle but not necessarily the war. I got hit with the "Fine, if it's what you want" but I said perhaps we should get the bigger one and if we think it's too big to bring it back. I have 0 intention of it leaving the house once it's in situ!

Soundbar isnt needed but a good one (expensive...) will improve the sound a lot. Atmos ftom TV speakers is a joke, atmos uses speakers in ceilings.

C9 will certainly be worth purchasing April if stock is still around.

Go 65" of course.

We just took a trip up to John Lewis and was quite impressed with the sound even in the large store. They had a LG soundbar for £250 next to it so what we'll do is see how we get along with the sound and if needs be, get a soundbar at a later date. I do like the idea of a Sonos one as we can add in the Ikea speakers but not sure just yet

Built in sound is crap get a sound system

If money was no option we'd get both. But we are relatively poor and can't get both :(

It's ok for speech but it has no midrange, so yeah.buy again £2000 TV and using piezo buzzer for sound system?

Parents q acoustics qtv is 10x better, clearer sound between bass, midrange, and treble, plays louder, lower, wider soundfield with ABR speakers

It's like having a Ferrari fxx and putting Citroen 2cv wheels/tyres on it.

I wouldn't have any qualms ripping out the speakers from the LG.

This is much better sound it only cost me £150

It’s really not that bad..... lol....

Maybe yours is faulty.....

No it's just bad. Maybe ok for limited frequency range TV broadcast bit it fails on action movies. Distortion city, unless you reduce bass so much but then might as well have a couple of Bose speakers. That qtv subwoofer is much better I was actually impressed I put on saving private Ryan intro and for £150 it's a bargain, plays louder than parents ever needy (they are hard of hearing) and bass clean and loud, at least with bass switch on lower position, on high it's a bit too loud relative to the l/r speakers in level and extra volume causes it to distort. But it's in order of magnitude better than the LG.

Thanks for that something like could probably work wonders without breaking the bank too

Jusy saw the date. Bit late on that one! We'll see how it goes for a month or two after getting it. We've always been using the TV speakers

Qtv is only upto 40" it's also basic with no hdmi input only optical, single input.

But it's easy to use, complicated sound bar where have to switch inputs too difficult for parents.

I disabled TV speakers so they won't fiction at the same time as the soundbar.

But can't find out how to lock out optical output to fixed if you adjust volume it adjusts optical level

I don’t get distortion unless I turn it up to nearly max ? Mid range also sounds ok too voices are clear and easily heard. Is yours 65” maybe the speakers are better although I’m pretty sure they are the same....

Play a bass heavy action movie scene it distorts it just sounds bad. Mines the 65"

I watched a few episodes of star trek ds9 it played ok but independance day Parp Parp Parp lol.

So why bother. £2000 TV.....so why bother with tishy sound system

Like I said the sound works but I wouldn't be happy with that. Wharfedale diamond at £50 plus t amp at about £20-£50 is a massive upgrade plus you can use the diamonds later in av setup maybe for rears

I would buy the Tv and see if you are happy before buying anything else. I don’t get the distortion at anything other than near full volume which is pretty loud. Yes it does not match the bass of a sub or the sound of a decent dedicated system but it’s far from bad as far as tv sound goes and more than usable whilst saving for a better system if you feel one is needed.

Yeah I think this is the best course of action. I've never had a decent soundbar or sound system for a TV so I'm not missing anything really

Just watched.st tos episode had to have it at 100%. Ok to listen to. Mostly speech.

Put on star wars intro new hope and was grimacing god it sounds bad.

If you need it at max volume I would say you are either deaf or something is very wrong with your tv or how you have it setup. If you hate the sound so much why even use it if you have something else to use for audio ?

We got ours from Costco, it was cheaper even when including membership fee (we were already memebers, I was actually going in for the B9 at 1600 but upsold myself) it has 5yr warranty plus 90day no quibble return, I specifically asked if it was too big could I pack it up and return and was told that was fine :D

Same discussion with missus re size, she wants to return it, I think it is too big also if I am honest but keeping it anyway, 90 days to win her over :D

Absolutely no issues with sound, go bigger, I have barely had the TV over volume 18 over a number of sources.

Can't accept it sound crap? Think you're used to just bad sound. Nothing wrong with hearing brother was here he was laughing how bad it was lol

Gain seems to be different from broadcast and dvd/interal usb hd playback.

Thought try it out again, but went back to my seperates haha

I've always found Blu-ray's quieter than TV, apart from stuff like game of thrones. Obviously nothing come close to the levels of some of the daytime TV adverts:p.

Its crazy how so many people rock beautiful OLED displays but pair them with bargain basement sound or sound quality coming from their low watt speakers.

For a home theatre experience, I ALWAYS suggest investing 50/50 in speakers, accepting the speakers will likely last you for the rest of your life whilst the AVR and the TV will be outdated within a couple of years. A good set of speakers is really a big investment in the future of your home cinema setup and they age incredibley well.

My KEF speakers with my monolithxl subwoofer + atmos kef speakers are still very very relavant today whilst my 65'' panasonic 902B I bought at the same time is now lacking dolby vision, showing its age PQ wise, no gsync, no hdr10+, no variable refresh rate, could do with an increase in size etc. and is due a replacement. The speakers I can honestly probably sit on for at least 10 years.
