LG to Introduce 34-inch IPS 21:9 UltraWide (Model UM95) monitor

It’s the natural aspect ratio for movies so it’s actually been mainstream for many many years already. It’s only now that these monitors are out that people are realising just how much more immersive not having black bars top and bottom like on a 16:9 screen is for multimedia and in the case of tehse 34” 1440P displays, the extra screen estate for desktop multitasking.

I have one of these monitors and also a 21:9 TV (Philips 58PFL9955H - http://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/58PFL9955H_12/cinema-219-147-cm-58-inch-full-hd-1080p-digital-tv) - unfortunately they've stopped making them. Its resolution is 2560 x 1080p IIRC.

I would definately go 21:9 again for my TV if/when I make the 4K move - providing they exist of course.

In normal tv viewing I lose a bit off the top and bottom of the pic (e.g. the leader and lap counts on F1 stats) but I can put it back and it stretches the outer 1/4 or so of each side of the picture but keeps the middle in the normal 16:9 ratio. In practice you don't notice anything wrong unless you stare at the edges of the picture of a while.

This (just) announced 105" from LG would be nice but stupidly expensive and I'd prefer something in the 65-70 range - http://blog.gsmarena.com/lg-announces-105-inch-219-5k-curved-television/

Yeah I realise that was the case in the film industry but it doesn't necessarily translate to the home user - remember we had to put up with 'square' (well 4:3) screens for more years than 16:9? :D

I remember seeing the Philips 21:9 TV with Ambilight but it was so expensive and very few broadcasts seem to cope well with the format. I'm hoping this current trend for ultrawide continues and revitalizes interest in it. I think there'd have to be TVs from the big players in this format again to keep the momentum going though...

for gaming I also think 21:9 is the way to go.. the wide aspect ratio is so much more immersive and its great being able to see more at the sides.
Cant wait to try mine tomorrow. I just pray theres no faults or too much bleed lol.

Yeah mine flickered aswell as soon as I enabled it.
How the hell do you tell the difference between IPS glow and backlight bleed.... if theres bleed are you supposed to see it when your looking directly inline with the edges? I can see a glow when I move off axis but that's just the IPS glow from the whole screen.

Glow changes when you move your head around relative to its position, bleed is constant.

Hmmm does this seem like an acceptable amount or would you return it for another one?

I can notice it anytime theres a black screen but I don't really know how much better the next one will be lol.

Its not actually as bad as this when looking in person the camera over exposes the image but it gives you a good idea of the bleed I have.

The line in center is just the light from the window its the corners that im showing..mainly the bottom left and right as the top left is fine at normal brightness.

20% brightness................my normal brightness....
