LG to Introduce 34-inch IPS 21:9 UltraWide (Model UM95) monitor

This might be a bit of a daft question but is display port or HDMI better at running this monitor at full resolution or should both be equal?

I had issues with my Dell 2713 over HDMI so just bought a display port cable and that worked fine so that's why I asked.

The U2713HM doesn't have an HDMI 1.4 port and therefore doesn't support 2560 x 1440 at 60Hz. HDMI 1.4 which the 34UM95 uses does not have the bandwidth to support 3440 x 1440 and only HDMI 2.0 (+) supports the 21:9 aspect ratio anyway. So use DisplayPort as you are.

Thanks guys, I didn't realise there was such a difference. I don't have a thunderbolt output just DP and HDMI.

I'll probably try and sell all three of my monitors for one of these in the not to distant future.

If you don't need Thunderbolt then it's worth keeping an out for the upcoming curved Dell U3415W, although that will be more expensive. The AOC U3477PQU will not however, as it's a flat screen and is rumoured to be under £600. Not due until after Xmas though.

I've got a 2405, 2407 and a 2713 so I do love the Dell monitors and I am aware of it. Curved although would look great isn't essential but I do not have the money for the curved LG. I'd have to sell all three of these monitors to be able to afford this one.

nope, it's supported natively :)

from the manual:

21:9 works fine over hdmi 1.3/1.4 :)

I don't really care what the manual says. Do you own the monitor? Have you tested HDMI at the native resolution?

It's a fact that HDMI 2.0 introduced support for 21:9 and that older revisions don't support it. I've tested other 21:9 monitors and have seen first hand that HDMI 1.4 doesn't support 21:9. Furthermore I have been assured by AOC that this panel is no different - not capable of displaying 21:9 over HDMI.

I have a 29ea73 at home and a 34um95 at work, yes. So yes, i'm well versed in both 2560x1080 and 3440x1440 over hdmi and displayport.

lovely attitude:confused:

Here's a photo i took of a 34um95 runnning 3440x1440/50hz over hdmi

do you need more?

I apologise if I come across as brash. My attitude is based on utter bafflement. The resolution that the monitor is apparently running doesn't matter (reported resolution), it is always reported as such regardless of whether it's displaying correctly. Look carefully at the text on the desktop icons and compare HDMI to DisplayPort. Do they really look the same? The interpolation may be quite good so at first glance it may appear OK, but closer inspection may reveal that it isn't displaying the resolution correctly at all. Games should make it quite obvious either way based on their FOV.

This is a genuine question, because if this monitor does support 21:9 over HDMI 1.4 then it goes against the specification entirely. It was specifically added to HDMI 2.0 and older port revisions haven't traditionally supported it. LG might have done some internal magic, which is fair enough if true. But equally confusing.

Yes It's 1:1 pixel perfect, confirmed with lagom sharpness tests etc. There just isnt enough bandwidth available to hdmi 1.3/1.4 for 3440x1440/60hz.

Thanks for confirming. I'm sorry if I came across as rude earlier. My head had exploded with confusion after this revelation and you were on the receiving end of it. :D

That's really interesting to know. Thanks for testing it BTW. -1 to that AOC guy (not the one on this forum BTW) and the HDMI consortium as well. ;)

Well, we need more information on what was added to 2.0 to "support" 21:9. I dont think its anything other than official support or it could be something else that doesnt affect current displays (specific timings aimed at TVs rather than monitors maybe, something like that). Also, AOC's page on the 34" says 3440x1440/30hz for hdmi, i dont think the AOC has hdmi 2.0 ports so i'm assuming 1.4. That's not quite 50hz but then AOC recon it wont work at all so either they're wrong, the page is wrong or both are :p

I take it any game that doesn't support 21:9 can be run at 16:9 (2560x1440) on this monitor scaled perfectly just with black bars down each side?

Are there any issues if you do that?

I have an upgrade itch to build a new X99/GeForce 980 based system and a 34" 21:9 monitor of some variety would compliment it perfectly!

I will be joining the owners club on this when delivery comes tomorrow... just praying I don't have any major issues with bleed, etc.

Figured while it was £50 off was as good a time as any to buy in. Even then, still pricey though!

Fingers crossed I get a good one!

Now I just need a nicer stand...
