LinuxMint 6 released!

Zero success here - downloaded the ISO and burnt the CD. Booted from the CD, after lots of activity, it just hung on one machine. On the other machine, I got I/O error on device sr0 whatever that is... maybe a bad burn ?

OK, decided to try installing from within windows instead - and it check the files and the checksums are correct, so the CD is fine. For some reason, neither of my machines will run the CD as a live CD. Let's see how I go with the install within windows

Well, the HD install inside windows went fine, but then on re-boot I got the spash screen, then a blank screen for a few minutes with lots of disk activity, then the machine just re-booted. So, booted back into Vista, uninstalled through control panel. It didn't remove the bootloader as I was lead to beleive should happen. The I ran EasyBSD, and that wouldn't get rid of the bootloader either ! Grrr !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really ****** now. Ubuntu has been installed on this box before, nevr any hitches with that, and Easy BCD got rid of the bootloader without any problems

EDIT: wait, this is just the windows boot loader, not GRUB or anything else ? If so, that is easy to fix

OK, yes the Windows boot loader. Removed the Mint option in EasyBCD, back to where I was. I'm just going to go for a full Ubuntu installation (dual boot) at least that works.

ive been running mint for a few days now ands its great BUT i get an annoying problem once the laptop has start where each time you move the cursor the screen flash's and it will do it for a good 5-10 mins.

Ubuntu booted perfectly from the DVD, I am typing this message from it. Very odd, Mint is Ubuntu based, but it won't run on either of my machines, yet Ubuntu is perfectly happy. Ubuntu it is for me. Thought I'd give Mint a go, but the experience was not good.

Tuvoc, i've never had a problem with ubuntu or mint (only tried them a few times)

i just downloaded the iso's, burned with imgburn and was off

Ubuntu is working well except for the mouse that seems to jump around a bit, have to solve that otherwise it is unusable. Mint just wouldn't run at all on either of my machines
Ubuntu has come a long way since I saw it last !

a bit late to the thread but i have just installed mint. i went from ubuntu, couldn't find a decent cd ripper and sound juicer wouldn't work ripping mp3's even with the good, bad and ugly gstreamer packs installed! ( i was using a ripper in wine, but it was a bit impractical, took quite a while to load up)

SJ worked straight away in mint with mp3 and aac. :D i find that its no more bloated than ubuntu or windows. so im happy. boots a hell of a lot quicker than ubuntu too. (liking the green theme, makes me hungry for some reason >_>)

great starting out distro and ive tried pretty much everything out there although im no pro especially with command line but its ne of the nicer ones. ive also recently tried mepis 8, and that was very good too.

My carp old laptop is still running well with Mint, and being used daily by both myself and my lady as a web-browser and e-mail machine :)

Very impressed with it really. Almost totally solved a little problem for me, if only i could figure out how to get it install a wireless dongle! At the moment it has to be plugged directly into my router. Not too much of an issue as its located right next to it 99% of the time.

The problem with Sound Juicer is it doesn't tag files fully by default. It misses out track numbers etc in the internal tags.
If you're not scared of a terminal try using 'abcde'. Sound Juicer is pretty neat but needs polish, abcde does it all correctly.

Not sure why sound juicer didn't work on your Ubuntu setup. I assume it's because you didn't have lame or faac properly setup. Nevermind eh.

just to fully fully confirm

IF I were to install this, theres absolutely NO WAY I will lose my Windows, I can't wait to make the full switch but for the next 4 weeks I require Windows for uni work...

no guarantee, repartitioning could lead to data loss as is something going wrong and loosing the bootloader (which is fixable from the windows cdrom).

if its that important maybe download virtualbox (free) and try it that way.
