Living in University Halls

ive done a btec.. no results yet :(

Didn't they tell you what grade you got at end of the year??

With us they told us what grade we had based on out points we had gained etc etc, I got PPP myself and ive just got to wait for General Studies which i know ive got an E because I didnt go to any of the A Level exams for it :p

Ok, i don't mean to sound like a douche, but is it really true about all the banging that goes on at universities?! or does it happen, but not as often as everyone makes out?

:-) (PLEASE let it be the 1st one)

depends on you and your Uni.

I was lucky enough to bang my freshers rep on the first night - so before actual term began, and, for the most part, the next 3 years continued in a similar vein.

Don't be shy, don't be keen, develop a wide circle of friends e.g. house/halls, course, clubs, sports then relax and enjoy the ride

41 - bring bluetac for your posters, whitetac don't stick as well. If they don't allow bluetac as they leave a mark, use white toothpaste, when its dried, it sticks, when you take it off, wipe with wet towel will get rid of it

42 - If you have an old stereo or old TV that you don't give a crap about, put it in the kitchen/communal area

43 - Have emergency snacks, for those late night chats in the kitchen or after you know but don't want to leave the room.

44 - In the first few days, report any damage already in your room to the accomodation service, so you are not going to get blame at the end of the year. No things is too small, even chips off paint or gum on the carpet.

45 - Bring some coat hangers with you, there might not be any.

46 - Ready meals are expensive, more so than real ingredients.

47 - Be prepared for the 4am fire drill, then be prepare to see people come out half dressed and may be some got interupted mid way. lol

48 - Get some post-its, great for leaving messages for your friends on their door.

49 - Don't lent your friend the library card !!! You will get fined when they forget the books.

50 - Don't go too mad on Freshers Week, you want to be able to remember it, and talk to people and make friends. Passing out means you'll miss it all.

never bothered with a job in my 1st year at uni, flat mate did and he hated ding it.
Weekdays you're in uni, or out gettin ******, weekends is your lie in so a job was a huge no no for me!
make sure you introduce yourself asap, i felt like a right **** in september last year doing it, but within a few weeks people were themselves, just be polite and nice for a few weeks then let yourself go! It worked for our flat anyway :D

oh and tv licence, by law get one as its the law, but you will get letters if you have one or if you don't, they say they are going to come round and check if you have a tv but they don't. Why would they tell you they are coming round ? You could just hide your stuff lol...

Another thing I was wondering, what kinda of things did people do for jobs while at Uni?

I didn't really work, I can make a list of some of the jobs my friends had.

1- JJB sports
2 - at the union bar
3 - River Island
4 - outdoor sports shop
5 - Pub
6 - Strip club (behind the bar)
7 - Games arcade
8 - Cinema
9 - Supermarket
10 - Debehams

I did have a part time freelance job as an Interpreter thou, paid really well when it lasted. £15 an hour + travel. Worked out like £30k a year !!! lol, shame i didn't work enough.

Hehe, i've been told that the shared flat or whatever it is needs to buy a tv licence for everyone and we get free sky tv aswell :D

WIN!!

I can't quite see why also.. enlighten us :)
*sigh* Ok, it doesn't sound bad, but it really is something not to bring up.

Most of the people in your university will of likely got similar grades. Everyone has got on the same course. Everyone is equal. Bringing up A level grades and results looks like a sneaky 'Look what I got' attempt. People can often bring it up in conversation, but, why? There are far better icebreakers.

Three particuarly good examples:
Between myself, a freind, and another girl (A.G.):
A.G.- I don't see why some people only did three A levels, it is possible to do four.
Freind - Well... yes, but it doesn't matter as long as you got into your course.
Me - I only did three, I didn't exactly consider myself lazy.
A.G. - I guess. How close did both of you get to 600/600?
Me - *stunned expression*
Friend - errm.... does it matter? *Looks as me in a 'wtf' face*
A.G. - I got 600/600 in English. But I felt that it was my weakest subject, so thats why I chose to do it as a degree.
Me - *leaves the room in disgust*

Between myself and a 'friend'.
Me - Tonight is going to be banging :D
Him - YEEEp!
Me - Wow, I'm so glad I went here over anywhere else...
Him - Yeah, I don't understand how people couldn't get in though.
Me - ?
Him - Well it wasn't exactly hard to get straight A*s at GCSE or straight A's at A level was it?
Me - .......
Him - what?

Between myself and someone in my tutor group. Day 1:
Me = Hello there! I'm Michael, guess we are in the same tutor group :D
Him = Heya, I'm Steve
*Course banter*
Him - So, how did your A levels go.
Me - Oh, well obviously. We all got in didnt we? =)
Him - What did you take?
Me - Erm... Maths... Biology... and Geography.
Him - Not Chemistry then............?
Me - .... nah, didn't really get into it.
Him - *Looks at me strangely*.... I see....
Me - ...?
Him - I took Chemistry, Biology, further maths and physics.
Me - Wow, I bet that was hard work.
Him - Yeah, wait till you hear what I got in them.... STRAIGHT A's!
Me -.... congratulations, you must have worked hard. Excuse me....

And all three turned out to be idiots. Don't let the idiot be you.....

Get it? :)

Because it makes no difference.

you are all at the same uni, if they have better grades than you, you'll look like an idiot. If they have worst, you'll look like showing off.

Serious advice time I think. Meet loads of people, but don't spread yourself too thin. One guy knew everyone but is staying in halls again because he didn't make any great friends.

If you don't like a social group, give it a chance, through it you may meet new cool people. If its still lame you will drift apart anyway.

You will think 'Oh this is going to be hell' on the first day.

People only really start showing their true colours around 4 weeks in. Then you will find out who everyone is.

For the love of god take a n64 with goldeneye or mariokart and four controllers.

Make an effort with people on your course. Some of my best pals were made from getting to know my lecture pals a little bit better.

Give everyone a chance. They will then give you one too.

Best advice in here so far I think. I especially agree with it taking a while to really get to know people - in the few few days and weeks everyone is trying hard to be likable and make friends, so dont be surprised if people you thought were nice turn out to be horrible - or even if not horrible, just people you couldnt be real friends with. I guess this ties in with the 'you wont be hanging out with the same crowd come xmas time' - the main mistake I made in my first year at uni was to keep sticking around with my corridor-mates after it became obvious they were just mates, not friends. Its harder to meet new people after the first term so make the effort at the start. Yes it can be scary, but almost everyone feels the same way so dont worry about it :)
Have fun!

Remember that everyone else is in the same situation.

Walk around, knock on doors, introduce yourself. Get ready for the time of your life.

SO TRUE!!! i finished uni 2 yrs ago, the best thing you can remember is that every1 is as anxious as you. just smiling at someone will light up both your days :)

forget the stupid posturing and jostling of 6th form. every1 starts uni at exactly the same place. with that there is potential for more fun that you can imagine.

Practical tips:

have a bottle of spirits and a mixer in your room- invite people to come and share a drink

bring a games console with an accessible multiplayer game- great icebreaker.

accept every invitation made to you- i met my bestest ever friend ever doing a 3 legged pub crawl when we both needed partners and she had a massive hangover. german girls for the win !!

remember that you only need 40% to pass and that it doesnt count to you final degree classification ;)

EDIT- WORK IN THE STUDENT UNION duh!!! best way to have friends come visit you while you work. failing that set up a shady internet porn site that loops adverts
