Long time no see. Upgrade time.

Edit yeah it fits. 1700 had the same hole spacing but the cpu sat higher so it was only the height you needed to address. When I built my 12700k rig I used an EK AIO and OCUK sent me the kit with it.

1851 is different IIRC. And blocks for it are rare as its a bit of a flop and thus expensive.

I'm kinda kicking myself now for not just getting a Thermalright 360 AIO. But I guess I'm into pain.

That's good then. I've had my blocks for a few years now and there were different SKUs for 115x and 2011 mounting, so I assumed Barrow were still going that route. I actually thought 1700 was using a rectangular hole pattern because of the elongated socket.

So just ignore me then!

I'm not actually too fond of the mounting posts though, at least not what I have. The M2 threads feel a bit flimsy to me when you start compressing the springs, but then again one one system I may have been cranking down a little too much to get the block perfectly level and make sure IRL dimensionally it matches the spec drawings and my CAD model (need sub-millimetre precision on a tiny build).

Gonna see if I can retrofit the mounting from an old EK Supremacy EVO, feels a bit more substantial.

Interesting to see that OCUK are now doing Barrow stuff. Fairly sure they weren't last time I checked.
I was too scared to get a 14th gen Intel but I believe (probably incorrectly) that the majority of issues were with i7's and i9's. Maybe it's just that the majority of people likely to experience issues were running the higher end chips and i5's were more in business PCs by OEM's.

Yeah, it all got just a bit too risky - buy an expensive chip and just cross your fingers it doesn't fry itself. Hmm, no thanks. I know Andy was right when he said I'd be good with a 12th gen i9...but I couldn't bring myself to by all new kit knowing that what I was buying was 3 gens old before I started! Went AMD and struck lucky on the 9800X3D lottery :D All set up on air just in time for me not to be able to be within 10 miles of it for an indefinite period of time *sigh*

Yup the problems were with 700 and 900s. The 600s are fine.

It's just the value thing for me. The board is stunning and was £215 (10% off) and the CPU was 229. When you consider it performs within 10% of the 7800x3d which costs twice as much? Yeah.

Yeah it's nice to see Barrow on here. The next block up was 110 quid. Over double the price.

But yeah from the 11700k it's a huge upgrade.

Good thing is I can either put the Tachyon and 11700k in the NAS or keep it as a spare. The latter sounds like a good idea given I have 3 rigs to keep running.

OK so I figured I would get another SSD. Mostly as it's going to be impossible to add any once it is looped.

Gen 3. Board has two gen 4 and one gen 3. I know I have a 2tb ATM but I don't remember if there are any others in there. There may be a 1tb in there already, meaning no point spending £20 more on a gen 4 only to find I can't use it fully. Love the brand name too, fockwit :D

Got this also. 1g. So I will need to test run it on cheaper paste before going ham. Hoping that it boots on 14th gen without needing to rip out my 12700k to flash it...

I should be able to bench that here as I have a spare PSU handy.

Depends how stressed your current NAS hardware is and/or what else you want to load it up with. If it's not being pushed currently, the time it'll take you for no benefit is going to annoy you. That said, if there's extra stuff you want to put on it, it may benefit. I've started running Home Assistant (Home Automation) and Frigate (CCTV recorder and object detection) but I'm running it on a Pi5. With a Coral TPU on the USB port (I'd have gone PCIE if I'd planned it from the start) it's managing the load pretty darn well tbh. Running just under 50% load all the time with spikes that don't hit 100% - that's mainly the cameras I think, of which there are two at 1080p (can do 2k but they're remote) and one 2k camera waiting running with a second waiting for me to be able to get up a ladder - it when it stops raining for a bit! ...but I digress :D

My money's on "Fat chance!"....although, since you have a compatible CPU actually available you may get let off. I remember having to buy an i5 just to flash an intel board. One thing I appreciated about the AMD board with flashback....which immediately came in handy :D

Yeah I doubt the NAS needs touching tbh. Already 11400f and 32gb RAM. It would literally just add two more cores. I reckon it's better to rebox it all and stash it tbh. I really don't want to go CPU/board/RAM shopping again any time soon. It only owes me £330 for the CPU and board. Try replacing like for like. No chance !

I did look at Asus's site and it lists the same BIOS to support all of them tbh. However, like I said I do have a 12700k if I get desperate. Well, unless it has flashback. Have been looking at the manual but not for flashback. Mostly ports, layout etc.

Now we just have to hope it all arrives.

I am guessing that is it. No mention of having to remove the CPU though. I think YT would help there...
