F2P'rs need to acquire 96 Turbine Points. Getting your toon to lvl 20 without dying will be a good start for you. Once you have 96tp, goto the online store and buy (yes BUY) the passive skill "Riding". If you are F2P this is the ONLY way of getting this skill and you need to buy the skill for each toon you have.
Once you have the riding skill you will need to acquire 500 silver in game. Once you have your 500 silver, you need to goto the Horse Farm to the North of Bree, and buy your horse. Once you buy a horse you'll receive a 60% discount off of future horse purchases.
If you decide to go VIP, there will be a quest at level 20 that gives you the riding skill. F2P/Premium doesn't get the quest.

There was an update earlier today which is why the servers were offline.
Anything decent in the update?
Get bored pretty easily everytime I log on these days. Although half of that is becuase most of the people I got along with in my kin have moved to another kin and a lot of the people I used to group with in Ettens have stopped playing.

Also, I'm thinking about making a second account for my gf. What would be a good second character class to complement my hunter? I'm considering a minstrel just to mix things up a bit, but they have seemed a bit wet and flaky in previous games i've played. Something about a harp just doesn't scream FEAR ME somehow...

Offensive minstrels can be pretty deadly. As you're a hunter you may want to consider a class that will take aggro off you. One of either a Warden (advanced but very versatile class), Guardian (Tank) or Champion (Off tank, dps) would be the best option. I'd personally recommend Warden and group with her in the early stages, this will allow her to practice playing as one whilst not constantly worrying about death.
