Really hope this turns out good. Even if it is like an Evora, that's not a bad thing - the Evora is a massively under-appreciated car in my eyes and still holds up very well today, it just needed a more fundamental refresh than the 400 and budget allowed.

If the second hand market keeps going the way it is, maybe I'll even be able to trade up from my Elise one day! That said, I think the Elise will never be followed up in the same way ever again, so perhaps a real future classic now.

I think the comparisons to McLaren are interesting - I've also always thought Lotus and McLaren have a lot of fundamentals in common, other than R&D budget. Unfortunately, I've not driven a McLaren and doubt I'll be able to afford one if I stay doing IT (in a car company).

McLaren took some heads from Lotus I believe and their cars are pretty much the best out there for steering and damping these days. Drive a GT3 RS and a 720 down a road and the Porsche will feel agricultural in comparison. McLaren has nailed steering and damping and you have to say some of that is probably because of Lotus heads and their own skills too. Lots of DNA hence my comment about them.

If the Esprit was out today it would be smack in the 570/600LT price line I feel.

McLarens seem like what you'd get if you put a V8 in an Evora. Though the Evora actually has [kid sized] rear seats :p

McLaren should drop PAS, they aren't much heavier than an Exige I don't think and they don't need it. There isn't much weight over the front wheels on mid engine cars. You gain a lot of steering feel without it :)

Haver to admit, never driven a Maclaren and personally wouldn't want to.. I find them to not have a try personality for a super car... I'm sure they're incredible to drive but for me, my mate the other week said look a Maclaren... I went yeah... what one was it? Haven't a clue... somethign about them they I just find uninteresting. At least the Lotus's (Loti? lol), have a charactor to them... just my opinion but yeah if I had serious money to spend, maclaren wouldn't be on any short or long list. Suppose everyone wants something different.

Back on topic, hope this new Lotus is a cracker be nice to see them back properly they've been in so much trouble for so long... hahaha

I've got to disagree with you on the PAS, my Esprit doesn't have it and is a pain to park and turn at low speeds. So much so I'm thinking about retrofitting it sometime in the future. I do agree about the steering feel though, it'll be a tough compromise.

Not long to go to the Emira launch! A public message from Jensen Button :).

McLaren steering is from the top draw of modern set ups as they have avoided going fully electric.

My old 996 GT3 had the best steering I have ever owned and matched anything from Lotus or Noble IMHO. When done well you can have both PAS and feel.

I think Porsche may have stuck with hydraulic PAS, for the GT models at least. Which is a step above electric.

Most manufacturers ditched it (probably for cost saving) which is annoying as it does numb it. I find on many cars you can rapidly move the wheel left to right and it barely reacts. If you do that on the Elise and Exige it will. There is softening or nannying of the controls at all :p

McLaren is still hydraulic too I believe and modern sports car will be pretty reactive in my experience.
