M4 firmware 0309 is now available

". This firmware resolves the issue where a m4 SSD required restarts after approximately 5,000 hours of actual “on time” use. " - who here would leave their PC on for 5000 hours continuously? Im not gonna bother with this firmware upgrade if that's all it upgrades.

The issues are far more wide reaching than just requiring a restart.

The drive can effectively die.

And it's got nothing to do with the PC being on continuously for 5,000 hours, it's when the drive has been powered up for ~5,000 hours.

If you used your PC 10 hours a day then you'd reach the 5,000 hours in around 16½ months.

My M4 128gb has just arrived. On it it says

Firmware Rev - 0009
Is this the same as 0309?

clearly your not the kind of end user who should be using an SSD or even a computer at that. either your suffering from Dyslexia or your have some other type of mental illness that makes your stupid beyond comprehension.

how is 0009 the same as 0309? you fail at a lot of things

This is what I used to flash via USB (I don't have a DVD drive)

Download the ISO from Crucial
Then get this tool

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/

Step 1 Scroll down to the bottom. Select 'Try Unlisted Linux ISO (New Syslinux)'
Step 2 Extract the Crucial ISO file from the zip file, point the program at the ISO file
Step 3 Select the USB drive letter.

Reboot and boot from the USB stick
Create

Worked like a charm! thanks mate :)

So much hostility! Cut it out lads.

Guest2, yes you need to update. Follow my guide in here if you want to do it via usb.

I agree, silly jump in the version number of the firmware!

Where did it say that? the update page says the below:

"Correct a condition where an incorrect response to a SMART counter will cause the m4 drive to become unresponsive after 5184 hours of Power-on time. The drive will recover after a power cycle, however, this failure will repeat once per hour after reaching this point. The condition will allow the end user to successfully update firmware, and poses no risk to user or system data stored on the drive.
This firmware update is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for drives in the field. Although the failure mode due to the SMART Power On Hours counter poses no risk to saved user data, the failure mode can become repetitive, and pose a nuisance to the end user. If the end user has not yet observed this failure mode, this update is required to prevent it from happening."

What use is a PC you have to restart every hour.

Having to restart every hour makes the SSD and PC virtually useless.

I may have gilded the lily slightly but it got elrasho to update his firmware when he wasn't going to ;)

Sorry if I'm being thick here but I've never updated the firmware on an SSD or burned an .iso before! I've downloaded the new firmware and extracted the .iso but if I right-click it I don't get the option to burn it to disc. Is it just the file called 'Boot2880' disc image file that I need to burn?

No you want to burn the .iso file. It is an "image" of the disk. Once burnt to a disk it will allow you to boot from it. Right clicking the iso should give you the option to burn (under Win 7).
Only extract it if you want to put it on a USB stick or something
