Malaysia Grand Prix 2012, Kuala Lumpur - Race 2/20

So how long do you think Sunama will avoid posting in this thread hoping we continual forget him being wrong yet again but doesnt have the id to admit it himself?

I smell schadenfreude popcorn :)

ps3ud0
its the second time hes said the williams rear end thing , i think he genuinely believes hes right.

it is a bit odd. The tighter the better around the rear. The issue last year was while the back end was great, the car was rather poor. This year its much better and has a faster engine.

*ALL* teams package there rear ends as tight as possible, i dunno why he is arguing otherwise. Redbull has always been tight, and look how it helps them.

everyone has a really tight streamlined rear end this year, even hrt

I think sunama's point is that nobody has copied William's uber low gearbox design, which is correct, nobody has.

But the reason behind the design was to create a low and tightly packed rear end, which is something everyone has adopted.

Copying the ends, rather than the means.

Autosport today had a few Williams people going mental (in a good way) over te Renualt engine compared to the Cosworth from last season

(edit - yes "going mental" was the polite version of what I was thinking lol)

The car itself is decent , without question - but it would be interesting to see what last seasons car would be like with the renault just to see the difference.

Aren't all engines, these days, of similar horsepower?

i dont think it varies massively, im guessing cosworth had no blowing at all though and probably not as good fuel efficiency (renault aparently dont need as much fuel as merc/ferrari)

No blowing? :confused::o

Engines, whilst similar from a horsepower point of view, would have differences in driveability and perhaps torque as well. Did Williams make their own gearbox last year or did they source it from Cosworth or somewhere else? It wouldn't surprise me if two teams ran Cosworth engines last year but one did better than the other just because their gearbox (whether self made or externally sourced) suited the engine better.

I think the gearbox this year is the same, or at least just an evolution of last years.

The move forward in performance is likely a combination of the teams ahead of them loosing EBDs (I don't think Williams had it), the Renault engine, and Williams just starting to get their act together and produce a half decent car.

But we are only 2 races in, they could do a Renault and just go backwards from here on in. They are already well ahead of last year though. They got more points in 1 race than they did in the whole of last season.
