Malaysian Grand Prix 2013, Kuala Lumpur - Race 2/19

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel should be suspended - John Watson

Former McLaren driver John Watson says Red Bull should suspend Sebastian Vettel for one race as punishment for disobeying team orders in Malaysia.

Vettel ignored a call to stay behind his team-mate Webber and overtook the Australian with 13 laps to go to win.

"The only purposeful way to bring him to book is to say 'you will stand out one race'," Watson told BBC Radio 4.

"I know that if other drivers in other teams disobeyed a team order they would be suspended or even fired."

More to follow.

It's a tricky one now for Red Bull, Seb is clearly the darling of the team but can they really let him believe he is bigger than the team?

Not sure if posted, but the TV didn't show this...

Edit:

Damn!!! only 3 pages back. Stupid F1 thread being massive after not going on the interwebs for half a day! GRRR

Assuming there are no further radio comms we haven't heard, RBRs attempts to hold Seb back were not 100% forceful. They never categorically said "You are ordered not to pass Mark". That, plus the eagerness to sweep it all under the carpet from Horner to me says that, while they may have had their butts clenched at the time, and come down hard had they crashed, at the end of the day deep down inside Horner is not unhappy that Vettel won.

He may not approve of the process, but he is happy with the result. RBR are not about to ban their 3 times WDC golden boy for winning a race.

Had he crashed into Mark and taken them both out it might be different.

I find it amazing how you know exactly how horner feels about it all especially deep inside his soul.
Could you get me an autograph seeing as you clearly know him so well? do you go fishing with him or something?

They shouldn't force him to skip a race but they could make him sit out a practice session

Race ends when the flag drops for the leader.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

That is utterly not at all true.

So if Webber and Hamilton had been duelling for 2nd place 20s back down the track from Vettel crossing the line, it wouldn't count because the winner had crossed the line? They aren't racing according to you...

No. The race ends on the lap the leader finishes but people do still need to race to the chequered flag for position.

It's sad. This is motorsport. Why should we, the fans, be happy with a team telling their drivers to stand off and not race each other, going against the whole idea of this sport...

This, 1000x this, IMO Redbull should be fined for attempting to fix the outcome of a race, team orders are one of the worst aspects of any motorsport.

Yes, so as he says, no-one passing Vettel is racing, as he has crossed the finish line, so by the time they get to him, they will have passed the finish line too...

You know what I mean.

Once the leader crosses the line, that line is the end of the race. Doesn't matter if you more than one lap down, when you cross the line its over. Therefore nobody going past Vettel when he is going slow is still racing, so theres no issue with Vettel going slow.

I cannot belive that the Vettel hate on here has got so pathetic that people are now trying to have a go at him for slowing down on his in lap! Are people really that desperate for things to moan at him about?

Nothing will happen, The best anyone can hope for is Mark gets to dish something similar out later in the season.

Edited my quote to reflect the part of his post I was referring to.

Former McLaren driver John Watson says *snip*

"I know that if other drivers in other teams disobeyed a team order they would be suspended or even fired."

So corruption and race fixing is rife in F1, we already knew this but why is it not dealt with when they are so open about it?? IMO an F1 team issuing team orders to drivers are just as bad as a goalkeeper letting the ball in for cash...

Okay, no-one's really bothered about that, the discussion was around why he'd slowed down, people were still racing. The point was, it didn't matter, he wasn't in anyone's way who was still racing.

Team orders are no longer against the rules, so they are fully entitled to order their drivers to do whatever.

But I agree, as a fan of racing I'm not happy that teams (all teams, not just RBR yesterday) are able to basically nullify the last stint of a race. Regardless of your opinion on the RBR incident, it was exciting TV, and we would have not seen it had the orders been followed.
