Or CCTV showing someone that looked like it could be someone who the copper recognised? Or identifiable but not actually filmed in the act?
Or inadmissible because your CCTV didn't meet regulations?
OK taking Dis86's account at face value.
It seems apparent that the CCTV showed a crime taking place at his property at the very least. And probably the date/time. If I'm reading this right then the police simply weren't interested in attempting to gather any further evidence?
Clearly they are willing to investigate some crimes (and "non-crime hate incidents"..)
It's not free speech if the Police come around and arrest you, how did you even just type that and hit reply?
Do you not envisage that one day hate speech laws could cover the criticism of a government, with the excuse being social cohesion or national security? Do you not see how that might be a problem? Have you seen the Chernobyl series and how oppressive speech laws were in the USSR, which is in living history? It only takes inaction for us to end up there
I would have thought the burglary itself would be evidence enough that a crime had taken place. Date and time, okay... but if the CCTV is inconclusive in and of itself, or is inadmissible, it's not really worth much other either way.
I refuse to believe the CPS wouldn't go for CCTV that was admissible and conclusive, or that the police wouldn't make attempt to make arrest if they knew who it was in that scenario.
Not farfetched at all. Criticism of the Turkish government on social media led to some nationals getting expelled from school or having their university scholarships revoked. I wouldn't be surprised if such a thing were attempted here in years to come. I'm just glad the 'porn ban' failed since that was taking things in the wrong direction as well.

Isnt it the anti free speech laws that make it near impossible to see inside the Uigur camps in China? Why do the Chinese citizens not openly talk about it? Why do they not just go see the camps and air thier questions with the guards or local elected official?

So how about we don't fall down the slippery slope of going so far as to not being able to talk about atrocities. But also not go down the slippery slope of allowing hate speech to flow and lead to genocide?

If you bottle up hate speech, You create resentment and force it underground. What happens to a kettle when you put the lid on it? It explodes violently. For me im the kettle and free speech is where i vent steam.
Take it away and i feel at war with society and the law. And you cannot pick and choose i already said controlled speech is not free speech.
Have you considered seeking professional help? We shouldn't give medical advice on this forum, so perhaps you should talk to your GP about these feelings of needing to use hate speech and of being at war with society and the law.

There's loads of laws that govern what you can say, when you can say it and to whom. Hate speech is just a slither. Why do you find that specific part of the law so restrictive?
Or do you equally spend your time arguing against other manifestations of curtailed free expression? The media watershed perhaps? Libel laws? Obscene publications?
Why do you feel like you want to express something which can be construed as hate speech in the first place?

The whole "hate speech" thing is difficult, because as we've seen lately, different people are offended by different things.
I'm not sure that applies to this incident much, but take recent examples of "cultural appropriation". Wouldn't take much of a nudge for dressing in traditional ethnic clothing to be classified as a hate crime, if you got a popular opinion campaign behind it.
And like most things, it starts with a vocal minority/pressure group, then it gradually gains acceptance and eventually becomes the norm.
Issue of morality are seldom completely black and white, and ideas of what is acceptable does shift over generations. Could quite easily see a time in future where "cultural appropriation" is a hate crime.

Haha so if i want to give a public speech about the danger of Islamic migration or write about it and the police come and if i get angry i am mentally ill? Wut?
I do notice this is another left wing craze, People who say things that fall under someone elses opinion of hate speech have the usual history of mental health tagged onto the news article.

When ***** exist alongside of the rest of us who would openly exercise their ability to discriminate and pour hate on certain people, the majority of society have decided that a line should be drawn somewhere and the right for people to be ***** is worth impinging so that we can live like civilised people where minorities aren't maligned due to irrational hatred.
If you are concerned that the laws in this country are limiting you from anything other than being a nasty **** from the point of view of freedom of speech, I'd be happy to hear an example.
