Man sends banana to black mans table in Wetherspoons pub

No the only details the app asks for is table number. No names or anything required. Also, what identifying information do you think the app takes? race, weight and height?
Of course ordering fruit from a pub is strange but 'spoons seem to sell all sorts of edible things so not that strange they sell fruit.

Either way, expecting that the person who served the food should've hesitated is a bit silly.

I do find it weird how it comes out on a plate though.

So is there not the likelihood that they'd ordered something previously? Or are we just assuming that they went in. Sat down. Ordered the banana. Probably watched the reaction and left?
Id expect the app to at least take name and age. That way if someone screws up with the table number at least they could say oh no, I'm Dave Smith and you know...age for obvious reasons.

Agree it's weird to serve it on a plate but as I said I find it weird you can order a banana there full stop.

Also id be reticent based on personal experience of being the butt of jokes but also false accusations of racism in the past because some people, particularly on here, look to be offended.

It doesn't, speech doesn't need to be regulated, hurt feelings or offense isn't the same as material loss or physical harm. That's why the concept of free speech exists and the concept of free murder or rape doesn't.

Free speech doesn't cover calls to action or violence. It covers expression. You clearly know this by citing the specific example you just did so why bother making it a point of debate?

I raised it because it clearly means that there are limits to free speech.

If I express an opinion that a group of people are not human, and therefore don't deserve human rights, is that acceptable? That surely can be seen as a call to action also?

No that's not a call to any specific action. What action would you suggest the hearer would identify from that speech?

I think you would have to infer just as much from the context as from the speech itself (ie, is it being said in an orderly debating society or at a KKK rally?)

e: Not so very long ago, that speech could have been the subject of discussion in a debating society. The speech itself in that context would not have been a call to any specific action.

Can't believe this thread is so long.

If harassment, intimidation or threats are being made, then the police should get involved, otherwise people should just move on with their lives. I don't go to the police every time I have a bad experience with someone.

I'm all for people having a laugh and all that, and I think the 'victim' was over doing his reaction. But it was clearly a racist move.

Yeah it only asks for your table number and nothing else. Sadly I left the days of looking 17 many years ago so I'm not sure how the whole age verification thing works but for food and drinks it's all through the app. Just pay via Apple Pay or debit card but even then it doesn't take any details (I always use Apple Pay so I'd presume it asks for your initials and last name at least)

I used to hate Wetherspoons until I learnt I could order what I wanted through the app with 0 human interaction. It's both a godsend but also a trap as it makes ordering super easy.

Maybe I'm missing something, but whats racist about a banana?
He was left "shaken"....its a banana, what on earth is going on?

Definitely missing something

That's pretty stupid. And yeah...he's missing something. Or being...special.

Until you said it, i never actually thought about how they check for age as otherwise they'd get to your table with drinks already poured!

I'm not above saying I enjoy a cheeky, no doubt microwaved to hell and back, cheap curry or steak from 'Spoons. Who can argue for food and a drink for under a tenner. And now social distancing is in place you don't have to rub shoulders with the clientele... who leave a bit to be desired.

The irony isn't lost on me that I also eat there :p

I'm with the 'pathetic hurt feelings' crowd.

Involving the police over a banana ffs. What a selfish crybaby.

So your anger isn't with the person who did the stupid act, but the person who was the target? The target was the selfish person?

....OK. I mean I suppose someone went out of their way to buy them some fruit for one of their 5 a day. They should be grateful.

I'd take a free banana. Free innit.

But frankly we know why he did it.... let's not beat around the bush. The dude doing it knew exactly what he was doing.....
The apparent debate is if it is acceptable in modern society to do such a thing, and shockingly if the act of sending a Banana somehow falls under the category of free speech

I like hearing the view of others*, the sheer vastness appears to prevent desensitisation(!)

*to an extent

I was burgled a few years ago, they arrested and charged 6 people. Burglaries are not dismissed, at all.
My grandparents back door was forced open in broad daylight - nothing was stolen so it was assumed they disturbed the burglar as they were coming in. 999'd it, but because nothing had been taken no further investigation took place. The police weren't even concerned that it was sheer luck they hadn't been in. No forensics that could potentially identify the culprit, no dusting for prints, that was it. So technically, yes, not all burglaries are dismissed but some aren't investigated at all.

Send a banana to a black man in the pub.... Plod at your door and off to court for you Sonny Jim ....

Say you want to kill people based on their race on the BBC.........

"when we say we want to kill whitey we dont really mean we want to kill whitey (we do) *laughter* but when we say we want to kill whitey, it's like but not today. Whiteness is a capitalist structure"

People are starting to wake up and realise how badly we are being gaslight

I think this is it guys, we're finally going to have to retire our pocket race card.

God damn idiots ruining it for the rest of us

First mistake is listening to someone as guano crazy as her. What does "whiteness is a capitalist structure" even mean.

Never I'll keep hard of that card until it's pried from my hands! I did used to keep a Al Sharpton Race card in my wallet for the LOLs. No idea where it has gone now.
