Manager Merry Go Round 2014

How annoying! I suppose it is a bit tricky as Holland are doing World Cup preparations and have a game at the weekend.

I totally agree - but its a little strange.

Even from Holland's point of view, this daily speculation is surely better over and done with, so things calm down some until after Holland complete their WC campaign.

It's hardly fever pitch :o. They had Dan Roan standing there like the mug he is, the other day. I imagine it's nothing compared to the normal domestic interest in their own country's World Cup preparations.

Oh Moses, how do you take such a vanilla comment and turn it into that.

You need to get over your Franky obsession dude.

When Van Gaal was asked about the Utd job the other day he told the press to ask Utd.

To me it looks more likely that any hold up is Utd's end rather than Van Gaal/Holland's. What difference would it make to Holland's preparations if it was announced today or next week?

True, but a few of the press have suggested that's the reason for the hold up. I expect it is probably on our end though, and a few contract details need sorting.

Seems to be a done deal though, at least.

sherwood's biggest achievment was getting us scoring and bringing manu out from the reserves.

tbh.. I think the later was Levy. Making sure there's some future income from young talant..

Levy needs to stand by his next appointment because otherwise, he'll loose any respect and credibility he does have [or had]. If this happens again in 12 months then surely the problems at the lane or his, and no one else. I can't wait to see the day he goes..

Adebayor plays for every new manager/team he has, it's the rest of the time once he's done his bit that's the problem.

I think Levy has done a sterling job. All the other clubs who we would be expected to compete with (villa, Newcastle, everton, west ham) have had a disastrous decade compared to us under Levy. We are punching well above our weight season on season.

You can see why Levy fired each of the previous managers purely on footballing reasons.

Jol- needed someone to take us to 4th (arguably the harshest sacking but we had a really really poor start)
Redknapp- no loyalty, no plan b. We could only win by counter attacking and once that was found out we blew a 10 point lead
AVB- Baled out and was then exposed as being far too defensive with no ability to coach us to attack well. Relied on individual brilliance to score goals rather than the team attacking as a unit.
Sherwood- No system, pot luck attacks, used higher quality squad to bully less able teams but didn't have an answer against better teams than us.

I think all Levy wants is someone who can create a team that functions as a unit and who can get the best out of players. Redknapp did the latter but not the former. AVB was the former but not the latter and Sherwood was neither really.

Don't agree with that at all. Last time I checked figures Tottenham, as a football club, were worth twice as much as Newcastle, and almost 4 times as much as Villa and Everton. Not sure where West Ham were, but certainly not even as high as Villa.

And not sure how you define disastrous when comparing yourselves with those clubs?

Okay, you are well above West Ham, and Newcastle were obviously relegated as well. But Villa, and Everton to a certain level have been just as successful as Spurs.

I base the comparables on gate receipts. All of those clubs have a similar pedigree to Spurs and a similar infrastructure insofar as all those clubs have similar levels of matchday revenue as Spurs.

Everything else, like commercial deals and sponsorship essentially comes from Levy's savvy deals. The fact that Spurs generate buckets of cash is from Levy's deals rather than anything inherent to the club.

Spurs have outperformed all the comparable clubs over the past decade on the basis of trophies won, league positions, european progress, CL qualification.

Spurs havent broken into the niche of clubs that include Arsenal, City, Chelsea, Man Utd and Liverpool. All of them either have sugar daddies or much much higher match day revenues than Spurs (which provide a super
base on which to offer higher wages and therefore attract bigger names, obviously excluding any appeal offered by the team success)

Looks to me they are trying to get him to take Giggs. I understand why they would want that as his status is almost as huge as Sir Alex but I think he should just bring in his own people and own no 2. Find a role for him lower down.

Whilst I agree that gate receipts will be, by and large, the same for all those 4 clubs, the deals etc can't just be put down to Levy. Match day revenue is only a part of what makes up the financial footing of a football club. Tottenham, as a football club, have a large following, both at home and abroad, much bigger than the other 4 clubs you mention. This is down to the history of Spurs, rather than anything Levy has done. And that is WHY your sponsorship deals can, and are bigger than the other clubs. Simple business sense.

Also, how do you figure Spurs are that much more successful on the pitch? Yes, West Ham and Newcastle have both been relegated in the last 10 years, but similarly Spurs have on occasions finished much lower than some of those clubs you mention:

Spurs average finish in PL in last 10 years is 7th
Everton -8th
Villa - 10th
Newcastle - 11th
West Ham - 13th

And yes, Spurs have won one trophy, the League Cup in the last 10 years, but that is hardly the other teams having a 'disastrous decade' compared to Spurs is it? Everton have qualified for the CL exactly the same amount of times as Spurs.

So who in for Spurs? FDB or Pinocchio?

I would like to see FDB personally, think he wuld get the best out of Vertonghan and Eriksen.
That said the Southampton bloke does play some nice football, it annoys me he doesnt speak English though.

I think Pochettino would be a perfect fit for Spurs should they go for him. But Levy absolutely must give him, or whoever he brings in, time to get his feet under the table and bring success to the club.

Everything there is in place for Spurs to win trophies, and although I don't support them, I do like them, but it doesn't help keep hiring and firing. Pochettino gets results and plays really good football - just give him the opportunity and time.

Rumours this morning that Southampton are to offer £6m to Pochettino to try and keep him at the club, with a £30m transfer budget on top of any sales income. He's currently on £2m and it would leave him supposedly the third highest paid manager in the league.

I hope we do keep him as it would be a significant bargaining chip when trying to keep players like Lallana, it sends out the message we are prepared to fight our way further up the league which might persuade some to stick around without fear of messing about in 15th place with a mediocre manager again.
