Do we ban violent movies? NO. I could go to the cinema and watch quite disgusting things.
Why games? Are they an easier target? Why was a 14yr old playing a game rated 18+? Stupid parents!!!
You need violent games to channel and vent your emotions, it's a good way to release stress or anger.
A game does not make someone murder someone else, an un-hinged and socially unstable person does! It's all about upbringing and society.
Oh aye, blame the games though, please people now-a-days have such a knee jerk reaction to everything.![]()
I fail to see your point, are you saying video games can influence someone who would never kill anyone to go and murder? Because that is the only question that needs to be answered.DampCat said:Because in a movie you dont control what is happening. Movies dont actively encourage you to do things that it depicts. If you shut your eyes for a minute whilst something horrible happens the movie continues, the game does not. It forces you to do that act in order to move on. Movies are not shot in a first person perspective giving you the look and feel of actually brandishing a weapon. Movies do not generally have a narrative that connects you emotionally with the character, and his reasons for killing and maiming.
And what? Why on earth do you need violence to channel anger or stress? Why dont you try doing something constructive like making daisy chains or relaxing like having a hot rose scented bath. If you need violence to make yourself feel better, how are you any better than the people that actually DO murder people? You are pretending to murder people to relieve stress. It's ok because it's pretend? Experiment with this: Go and sleep with your partner and pretend that she is someone else, see how far that gets you. I have a feeling the line "baby its ok, im just pretending you're jessica alba.. its not real! i've had a hard day ok?" are not going to wash.
"A game does not make someone murder someone else, an un-hinged and socially unstable person does! It's all about upbringing and society." Is the most sensble thing that has clearly gone through your mind. Yes you're right. The kind of person who goes out and ties a kid to a railway track after playing a game is probably pretty unstable. But ask yourself this, if you didnt want to get shot, would you give and emotionally unstable and unhinged psycho a gun? i dont think you would.
"Oh aye, blame the games though, please people now-a-days have such a knee jerk reaction to everything." Yes, ironically, just as you do.
Have you even considered the implications of violent games in todays society? Dont get me wrong, i dont want games pulled from shelves, and you know why? because people like you and i are able to detach from these games. Albeit we play them for different reasons. I know the difference between right and wrong and if someone gave me a gun i'd not be inclinced, no matter how hard my day had been at the office, to use it. But turn on your TV. How many murders have there been today? this week? this month? How many murders havent been reported on your news station or in your local paper? What if, just for a random figure's sake, 1 in 10 people outside your window was socially unhinged (yes, that number may be a little steep, i honestly have no idea) and capable of doing terrible things? Do you really want to give them ammunition to do them with?
Ok. So its far fetched. And pulling games like Manhunt may or may not help reduce not just the number of killings, but the likelihood of the killings. But you really do need to put a little more effort into thinkig about why peopl ehave knee jerk reactions to these things.
The older generation do not understand computer games They do see the entertainment. they dont get as involved as we do. And at the end of the day, you cannot go through the population and pick out every single possible socially inept and emotionally unstable person that lives here. What if it really is 1 in 10? What would you do with them all? our prisons are full and there would be uproar (yes, there would, although i wouldt be bothered) if we just killed them. So if you cannot police the people, what do you do? you take away their weapons.
I mean really, what are the alternatives?
BBFC said:“Rejecting a work is a very serious action and one which we do not take lightly. Where possible we try to consider cuts or, in the case of games, modifications which remove the material which contravenes the Board’s published Guidelines. In the case of Manhunt 2 this has not been possible.
"Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing. There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game."
“Although the difference should not be exaggerated the fact of the game’s unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying and the sheer lack of alternative pleasures on offer to the gamer, together with the different overall narrative context, contribute towards differentiating this submission from the original Manhunt game.
"[Manhunt] was classified ‘18’ in 2003, before the BBFC’s recent games research had been undertaken, but was already at the very top end of what the Board judged to be acceptable at that category.”
“Against this background, the Board’s carefully considered view is that to issue a certificate to Manhunt 2, on either platform, would involve a range of unjustifiable harm risks, to both adults and minors, within the terms of the Video Recordings Act, and accordingly that its availability, even if statutorily confined to adults, would be unacceptable to the public.”

The answer is NO, a video game cannot influence a law abiding citizen to go out and feel the need to kill someone.
