Mantle Feedback/Bugs

After further testing I am getting a large amount of stuttering as some others are also. I know this is probably due to crossfire with my 7970's and I'm sure these will be optimized at some point soon with a new driver,. I can see where everyone is coming from with issues here and there which are going to be the norm with a new release.
I don't think its fair to judge AMD at this point as just 12 hours ago people were shouting "where is it".
Given time I think they will sort it out, I know its frustrating but hey, there is an alternative with DX11 to carry us over.

I'm not a hardcore benchmarker but just ran a quick BF4 comparison.

my system
5760x1080
msi r9 290 gaming @ 1100/1400
5670k @ 4.2ghz
16gb ram
BF4 ultra to high settings.

1.Landing on back of carrier 2.running up steps and lots going on!

(Fraps) dx11 13.12

1:49-50 fps
2:40-42 fps

(Realmware) Mantle 14.1beta
1:56-57fps
2:47-48fps

So about 15% quicker for me.

Running i7 2600k @ 4.6 g 7990 stock clocks under volted.
Can't see any difference in fps between DX & Mantle.

If anything Mantle is running worse for me. I'm getting huge CPU spikes every few minutes. The screen pauses and the spike line in the performance overlay goes off the screen.
Running DX the spike just goes to the top of the overlay box.

I'm hoping this is a driver problem in beta 14.1. Gone back to DX for now.

I gave it a go earlier and saw performance decreases. Now admittedly I'm on a 280X so didn't expect to see any real improvements but I'm getting bigger drops (down to 30fps) and more often. Changed it back to DX and it was much smoother. I'll wait until Mantle is properly supported before trying again.

I have the same card and a i5 3570k @ 4.6 and i got these results....

Old drivers...

Min, Max, Avg
29, 58, 39.170

New Mantle drivers...

Min, Max, Avg
45, 65 55.330

Definatly a good difference.

full 64 player shanghai same spot as in the empty server test.
dx11 48fps
mantle 82fps

from limited gameplay it feels much smoother on mantle and no drops below 60 in general play BUT....
there is a huge lag spike issue as the game will occasionally freeze for almost a full second. so mantle is currently good and bad

I will add this to the OP to clear up some confusion. Read the known issues.

Known Issues

Mantle performance for the AMD Radeon™ HD 7000/HD 8000 Series GPUs and AMD Radeon™ R9 280X and R9 270X GPUs will be optimized for BattleField 4™ in future AMD Catalyst™ releases. These products will see limited gains in BattleField 4™ and AMD is currently investigating optimizations for them.
Multi-GPU support under DirectX® and Mantle will be added to StarSwarm in a future application patch
Intermittent stuttering or stability issues may occur when utilizing Mantle with AMD CrossFire™ technology in BattleField 4™ - AMD recommends using the DirectX code path when playing Battlefield 4 with multiple GPUs. A future AMD Catalyst release will resolve these issues
Notebooks based on AMD Enduro or PowerXpress™ technologies are currently not supported by the Mantle codepath in Battlefield 4™
AMD Eyefinity configurations utilizing portrait display orientations are currently not supported by the Mantle codepath in Battlefield 4™
AMD Eyefinity technology is not currently supported in the Star Swarm application
AMD testing for the AMD Catalyst™ 14.1 Beta Mantle driver has been concentrated on the following products: AMD Radeon™ R9 290X, R9 290, R9 280, R9 270, R7 260X, R7 260, HD 7000 Series, HD 8000 Series, A10-7850K and A10-7700K. Future AMD Catalyst™ releases will include full test coverage for all AMD products supported by Mantle.
Graphics hardware in the AMD A10-7850K and A10-7700K may override the presence of a discrete GPU under the Mantle code path in Battlefield 4™
Frame Pacing for Dual Graphics and non-XDMA configurations above 2560x1600 do not currently work with Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4. An upcoming release will enable support
DX9 Dual graphics is not supported in AMD Catalyst 14.1 Beta. An upcoming release will enable support

Overall i think it's a good, positive start for Mantle, the performance is definitely there and easy to see, although if only for single 290/x users at the moment.

Performance has increased by around 15-20% for me which is great.

It's not without issues though and tbh, i didn't expect anything different, i get stuttering occasionally with by the looks of things seems to be a memory leak issue.
But i have no doubt that in the coming weeks these problems will be ironed out and all GCN cards will get support aswell as a crossfire fix.

very much looking forward to Thief now and what improvements that will bring over DX.
