what is the 'ril' part in Bovril - Bov must be Bovine?
so Bovine Squirrel?

Bo-vril

The name Bovril comes from an unusual word its inventor John Lawson Johnston found in a book. He found 'vril', which means 'an electric fluid', and he combined it with the first two letters of the Latin word for beef 'bos'.

A vote for Marmite.

The only thing it's such a gooey/gungy mixture it gives No More Nails a run for its money; you could hang pictures! A pain in the arse to spread and the lid's habit of welding on!

I had Bovril once, years ago, I wasn't adverse. Will have to try again as only vaguely recall.

Twiglets - no Xmas nibbles is complete without some Twiglets! :)
If you keep the marmite warm and it spreads much easier :)

Bovril makes a great drink (for kids at least), but a bad spread. Marmite makes a great spread (especially with a good cheddar) but a terrible drink. I'm not eight years old any more, so I voted Marmite.

Bovril is definitely easier to spread. With Marmite it works better if the toast is cooler before applying butter. If the butter melts too much the marmite is harder to spread and tears the bread. I've come across people who keep it in the fridge, must be like concrete.
why would you keep it in a fridge? It doesn't go off outside of it. No need to cool it whatsoever! As you say, it needs the warmth to make it even vaguely spreadable. Who are these people and how do we get them the help they clearly need?

Never had Bovril so far; only had marmite in 2022 for the first time! Marmite is okay; think I had it on some ciabatta dipped into some sort of soup. The taste in isolation isn't great, but combined with something slightly sweet it gives it a nice sour balance I think.

I don't think I've ever had a cup of Bovril. I always just spread it as an alternative to Marmite.
Isn’t it bonkers that it’s two different products. I’ve never used Bovril as a spread, I just drink the powder version.
