Martyn Ware tells Rockstar Games to do one!

Slightly different but rellevant...

in Euro truck simulator 2 there are multiple radio stations such as https://truckers.fm/listen that you can tune into in game in the interface ... for example https://truckers.fm/listen

Some do believe that our radio is hosted by numerous hamsters on a wheel... However our radio is actually hosted on multiple dedicated servers, each of these servers run a custom version of Icecast with a 100Mbps line to ensure we can bring you that crispy 320kbps music directly to your cab! The backend of our radio is supported with Azuracast, one of the leading radio solutions in the business. Our radio is fully licensed by PPL and PRS which gives us the freedom to play the songs you ❤. We have been supported by Make Me Creative who provided us with beautiful sounding jingles and kept the radio sounding fresh!

Alongside our radio servers is a powerful backend panel which allows presenters to interact with our wonderful community. We are constantly developing new features that can make the listening experience even better. If you have any ideas, please let us know!

They seem to operate like a legit licences radio station that you can stream into your lorry in game... and theres LOADS or radio stations that you can skip through

Maybe rockstar should adopt a similar model.

i was wondering similar.... however it would be a shame to lose the outrageous nonsense that you get on the GTA radio.... and somehow i cant imagine a legitimate radiostation would be too happy having a random advert for pisswasser beer dropped in there in the game in case people actually associated that kind of fluff with the real station

Kinda defeats the point if they just hook it up to a streaming service as the curation aspect is part of it too.

Rockstar curates the tracks to fit both the era the game is set in and specific Radio Stations, there are particular Radio DJ personalities too and parody adverts.

For example, Vice City is supposed to have 80s New Wave, 80s Rock etc. on stations with those specific themes.

Surely the monetary value of it is irrelevant? To anyone but the most nobody of nobodies it must be quite obvious that the money changing hands is simply a token to base the contract around?

Not really, it seems to be the entire basis for the disagreement, he thinks the monetary amount offered is too low.

I think he is in his right to reject the offer but the power still lies with Rockstar here. Your song could reach billions more people so if your rejecting that then its fine as Rockstar will select different songs whose owners would be begging them to feature their songs in the game.

Well, that's the point, it's not just 'a' stream, there's hundreds of radio stations you can browse through, normal ones like BBC or whatever, and ones with presenters & shoutouts specificaly for truck sim players.

Yup.

And it actively hurts the smaller names in the industry as it pushes the people wanting to use to the content to think that it should always be cheap, and if someone who is well established is willing to accept peanuts then why should they pay more for someone who is new or creating something new for them whilst early in their career.

It's a problem musicians, actors, writers and photographers all face on a daily basis with people, or worse multi billion dollar companies working on hundred million dollar properties expecting people to work "for exposure" or accept tiny amounts.
Exactly the same for game modders literally everyone makes money off it except the modders themselves hosting sites YT reviewers featuring the content the list goes on "but you're doing it for the exposure"!

I’m on the side of, get on with it. Get the profile with us younger lot.

Similar to the Kate Bush with stranger things. Ended up making loads on the side.

I’d be very very surprised if he’s making that each year from royalties.
She didn't do it for the exposure and she certainly didn't do it for the money christ knows she's got enough of that already. It was a personal favour to the creators of the show because they asked her personally and she's a fan of the show. The rest was as much of a surprise to her as to anyone else. If he thinks its an insulting offer and doesn't need the money then thats his decision. Laughable to think owes anyone a favour least of all the so called "younger lot"

Yes and this is my point, it is very silly to do so. It's not about the money, it's about an artistic partnership. Being in GTA is payment in itself. He just comes across as a Scrooge, incapable of giving something of essentially zero value for the betterment of all, including himself.

:edit: from my POV it might as well be $1, the value of the opportunity is completely detached from any offer they could make him. I presume they put that level offer in place to ensure less trouble should there be legal problems later, in terms of making it clear their offer is not wildly insubstantial.

that is a fairly weak argument imo and would be open to huge exploitation if that became a "thing".

I mean, by that argument R* shouldn't expect money for their game, after all its about artistic partnership and him allowing GTA to host his song should be payment enough to R* for their game. ;)

if an artist want to get their song in any medium, be it TV, game or what ever then that is great, but equally if they dont want it in there, or if they value their music and want paying a certain amount for its use then that is fair enough.

Orange man Trump continually gets moaned at by artists for him using their songs in his performances :D

I didn't say it was 'a' stream (singular) and what I said applies to what you've just described there - a streaming service of sorts, just having a load of different stations including BBC or whatever kinda misses the point of what Rockstar tries to do with the in-game radio stations, you're throwing away the whole curation aspect of that.

Not sure what's going on here, did I say anyone should be forced in to anything? Obviously this is my point of view, and artists are free to hold whatever deluded viewpoints they want to.

He should have taken the money and used the exposure to his gain, seems a bit short sighted.

Rubbish song tbh, not a patch on Hall and Oates on Flash fm 96.9

GTA V hasn't done anything for any musician's career his hasn't already done - Heaven 17 gets in excess of 300K monthly listens just on Spotify, Ware has been a producer for some relatively well known acts, etc. etc. this is Rockstar reading the room wrong, if they read it at all. Hopefully they all realise they got off on the wrong foot and can sit down and do it properly.
