Massive Car insurance costs?

yes ok I rang them - they said £50 for two weeks temporary cover on existing car ..
it probably works out cheaper to remove ncd from current car and then cancel that in a couple of weeks (£40) and start a locked in 12month policy for new car with ncd

They acknowledged ability to (atomically) change current policy to new car and renew policy for whole year does not exist , but would make sense to lock in price.

e: Aviva system seems messed up
If I quote replace current car by new one they give me a £17 refund (current policy £239p/a 10months to run )
or I quote add second vehicle with same ncd as current one they want £360 more (which will have same renewal as existing, I originally thought it was for 12 months)

What's the overlap for?
As Armageus suggests ... I may not be able to synchronize sale with the purchase of new vehicle, so will need to cover old car in the overlap period, if I own them both
or, I can possibly do without a car for several days and hand the old one over to the buyer a few days before getting new one and transfer insurance&ncd to new car when I hand over old car, or when I get new car
(but wouldn't own any car in that interim period, so should probably cancel insurance and start new 12mth policy .... an overlapping ownership is easier)

Just had the most Hideous time with Aviva Car Insurance. Got a quote from them, they rejected my NCD because it didn't have a date, so after sending them my full policy details 23/24, they rejected it again saying It was from the previous year because the Issue Date was 4 weeks before my start date, Well Obiously.... when asking them to review again they said something almost incomprehensible, and I quote. "I do see that my appologies as now we have to find out if the NCD are still in use with the current insurance because It shows that and in order we can use it, you must not be cioved and provide cancellation litre that consist end/expiry date"
So at this point I just told them to cancel.
My head is just, well smashed 'cus I can't take no more of this!
Well Done.... Viva Aviva.

yes that experience is interesting - don't insurance companies have access to one big database that shows who you hold(recently held) insurance with to validate NCD isn't cloned ? (maybe same db police could use)

I wouldn't mind, but I have NCD protected and they can see that on the currently active policy I sent them, I just can't deal with a company that acts like that.
Just trying to make people aware of this utter nonsense, and comparethemarket shouldn't be backing such guff.

I don't think I've ever been asked to send prove of no claims and I've been driving 20 years. You didn't say you were 30 with 15 years ncb did you :p .

Incase it's stolen until he sells the old one?
perhaps obvious,but I'd forgotten that with fully comp policies if you can drive other cars 3rd party .. I can transfer insurance from old car to new , and, if needed drive it under that 3rd party;
not sure what would happen if the car self-combusted whilst parked and destroyed something though.

The car being driven under 3rd party cover needs to have it's own policy and generally can't be owned by you/close family if that's what you're talking about.

As above only normally for cars you don't own, and they must otherwise be covered by another policy

I have and it was a nightmare because the company I had just left only recognises 9 years even if you came to them with more. I transferred to I believe it was also Aviva and they wanted proof of my 13 years NCB as my renewal only stated 9 years. I had to go back several years to get a letter from previous insurers confirming the NCB I had built up when leaving them. I then had to pass that letter onto the next insurer and so on to rebuild my NCB history. I eventually did it but it was a lot of hassle and time consuming and since then I have kept my records up to date. I may have this problem again because after three years with the same insurer they gave me a massive hike in premium so I switched to another insurer. The problem is that Agea who I have just left only recognise 9 years even though I came to them with 17 years so they have effectively wiped out 11 years of NCB basically because they can't be bothered to update things. Now I have to chase them up.

Is this verbatim what they sent you?!

What the actual **** does that even say - I'd be raising formal complaint if I received that (probably accompanied by that Samuel L Jackson gif from Pulp Fiction)

It's not as common as it used to be so check you actually have a Drive Other Cars clause..
out of interest I had checked it was present on my insurance, in advance of asking a couple of folks who test drove my car the same question.
(I guess dealers offering test drives have something more comprehensive)
