Massive earthquake hits Chile

Sorry but that made me chuckle :D

I can picture the TV news interview now. "It's totally bogus dude, the police man, they're clearing us off the beaches. The waves, man, they're going to be soooo intense but the police won't let us stay." Sadly they really do talk like that.

We do know it will be multiple waves inbound though, will hit the Big Island (Hawai'i) sometime around 11:05, hitting island after island over the next 30 minutes or so.

500mph.

Is that UK time? If it hits at 500mph it would scrap a good part of the island clean, I would think that the presure of the wave pushing agianst the island will slow it down out at sea. Hopefully it will only hit at about 30 or so mph.

No, sorry that's local time (Hawaii Standard Time). Tsunami is about to hit in the next 10-20 minutes, guess that's 9pm UK time.

the way it works is that the front of the wave as it hits the coastline gradually it slows down but the back end of the wave still travels at the same speed which is now greater than the speed the of the front part. So this difference in speed in the wave forces it to gain height .

i think thats whats causing the waves to gain height when they hit the shores and their decrease in speed

Watching the live feed, they were expecting it at 11:04 local time, its about 11:15 now. Nothing as of yet, they were mentioning discolouration in the water so that's the first signs of action.
