Massive earthquake hits Chile

Glad to hear you'll be ok Garp. It's amazing when nature strikes, just how helpless we are.

Glad it's all okay.

Back to Chile news, 8.8 is in the top 5 largest earthquakes since 1900, and so far only a few hundred people have been reported dead. That is absolutely stunning and seriously contrasts with Haiti, showing the big difference between a country where buildings are designed with earthquakes in mind and those where they aren't.

As regards to the poster earlier talking about people not choosing to live in areas where earthquakes and tsunami's can strike. Where do you particularly want to move 1/4th of the worlds population+ ? Squeeze it all into England? What about all the produce of those countries, where do you want to make up the shortfall in agriculture?

Well England's out anyway. They'd all get flooded. Mother nature is capable of springing surprises anywhere - just look what happened recently to Madeira. It's amazing just how much housing is perched on hillsides there (and they were building more while I was out there a few years ago). Guess what was first to go when the torrent of rainwater hit.

Happy for you Garp, can't be nice seeing your home washed away, or the fear of it.

My boss left Santiago Chile last night at 11pm.. Was there on business. Hows about that for a close call. He's back on US soil now safe and sound!

A lot of the rest of them have been 10cm high (lol?), it appears it's going to pass through without breaking any records for natural disasters. Chile's a well developed country in comparison to others and think they'll be ok.

Current death toll at the 120 mark approximately.
