Massive earthquake hits Chile

Link's not working.

Edit - you've also got to presume (sorry, being an ass here), that the guy knows which direction anything should be coming from. It's entirely possible he's facing the wrong (would that be NW?) direction, or he's just using the situation to flash thousands of people at once (I know I would).

Well a whole lot of people are watching the live feed so I think if they were facing the wrong direction someone would notice.

They have some massive highways for such a small island

edit: isnt Lost filmed around Hawaii?

In Honolulu the H1 is 4-5 lanes in most places, the drive round the island is back to normal "A" roads here if youe like, had a convertable :D
We were there, maui and oahu, for part of our honeymoon in December and Maui is the best place we have ever been, cant wait to return someday

Interesting watching news on other local channels, it's very clear over on Hawai'i island that water is zooming out of the bay, crazy speed. Had a few waves so far, reports bouys have seen 2-3ft on the initial wave. For those of you who have never been here, sea/ocean is blue, not brown or shades between, so the water's murkiness is unusual.

Thankyou mod for clearing up the thread, maybe back on topic now.

I'm assuming as it hasn't hit Hawaii so hard, when it reaches other islands further out it shouldn't be much to worry about?

Seems a bit of media frenzy over nothing at the moment ;/

I may be eating my words later but meh

Looks like we're safe. The Pacific Tsunami warning center is utterly baffled why we appear to have had such small waves. They're not cancelling the warning just yet, but they're now not expecting anything more serious.

Tsunami prediction systems are a little bit of an inexact science, the models are still being perfected with every case, there are hundreds of factors that can define how a tsunami wave will flow, what shapes and what amplitude it can form. A relatively small earthquake can cause a big Tsunami, and vice versa.

It was quite startling the speed with which the water was pulling out of the bay, thankfully it was just 6ft trough to peak.

There are a fair number of morons already back in the water though despite the drastic things it does to currents.

And it's still not enough, every day the H1 that runs through Honolulu is packed solid with commuting traffic. Public transport into the city sucks, at least in comparison to major cities in the UK. It's getting better and there is a rail project underway to create an elevated rail route from Ewa Beach all the way down to Ala Moana center and possibly at a later stage further on in to Waikiki.
