Masters of the Air 2023

I think the CGI is good in the air scenes (and at times very pretty) the landings / crashes seems to be where it looks less realistic

When the CGI aircraft are around "real" things like the ground, grass, tree's etc it kind of looks like the contrast of the aircraft skin is set too low so the metal skin looks too light which gives it that "cut scene from a game" look. Compare the metal skin from these planes to the CGI from 17 years ago on the 1st Transformers movie (Shia LaBeouf) and see how realistic that metal looks on Optimus Prime etc vs the "meh" 2024's big budget CGI.

I don't know if its time, money or what (it shouldn't be talent) but "modern CGI" looks so poorly done compared to stuff from almost 20 years ago and it really ruins so much modern TV/Film for me.

I think you have to realise that BoB is a freak of nature and it would take some absolute genius television to best it.
Haha, freak of nature. First time I have seen it called that. However, you're probably correct.
Just out or morbid curiosity, have there been any reviews slating BoB, negative ones. I feel I want to read some and be triggered. I know MotA has had a bag of mixed reviews, none slating it though.

Watched the first few episodes of this. Enjoying it but it's nowhere near as good as Band of Brothers. All the characters are just a bit too "cool" and I can't say I care too much about any of them. I'm interested enough to see where the rest of the series goes so I'll continue watching.

I’m kind of enjoying it. There’s no doubt it really hits home the fear they must have gone through flying in those things. Simply cannot imagine it.

However the show feels like it’s either all out action, or not much happening. There’s not much of a story going on besides them going on missions. I find myself ‘tuning in’ to watch this episodes action sequence, and not really see what’s happening in the long run.

Will be interesting to see where it goes.
Just read this comment after I posted. This sums up my thoughts as well. I'm hoping it's not just going to be more and more flying / bombing missions where everyone gets shot to pieces, but then I don't see what else they can / will show.

Better writers would make it more interesting on the ground, but they don't have them.

Besides the navigator with the snow globe I couldn't tell you the names of anyone else.

Visually it looks nice people have been talking about the speed of the fighters, might well be more realistic as opposed to how older movies portrayed things much slower. The fighters are flying at a few hundred mph after all.

It's OK at most, another Band of Brothers it's not by any means.

Looking at the clips, there is some ground stuff because...
both main characters got shot down in real life. One of them even escaped...

Great let's see if it's well-written and engaging.

What we have seen on the ground so far hasn't been that good.

I'm not overly bothered about what happens on the ground tbh, for me the story should be about the bomb group, and what happens in the air. It's supposed to be a 'true story' but I'm guessing it will be very embellished once the characters have bailed out...
The Tuskegee airmen will be showing up shortly, let's see where the writers go with that...

Latest episode is like a typical mid series filler episode apart from nothing really happened.

But actually some stuff did happen but it was either in the background or if no substance. Very odd.

I like it.
Sometimes it takes a few watching to appreciate nuance. I can feel the tension of the pilots knowing they're flying into certain death half the time, the effect that has on the people who watch them go and this weeks episode showed the moral grey area of being a pilot and knowing you are dropping bombs on innocent people.

I want to like it, but it just feels way too shallow for me. I don't feel invested in any of the characters. I had high hopes for this from Spielberg/Hanks, but this is nothing like Band of Brothers or the Pacific. Both had a gritty, natural feel; but there's hardly anything natural here, it's just green screen and CGI everywhere.

I'll keep watching and see if the ground episodes get better...

I'm also a bit triggered by the way they portrayed the RAF

Still enjoying it, just finished part 4.

Finally feel a little depth to some characters but still not enough. You just have to try and get it out of your head about BoB in comparison. Don't think anything will ever come close. This is good in its own right.

I think it's good, but ...

There just isn't enough character development in MotA. So hence You're not as invested as you might be in other movies or shows. That's really where BoB excels.

The action is good, but it doesn't really explain the tactical or strategic story clearly enough. Battle of Britain tells it's story much better for example, most older war movies do.

If you compare it with Memphis Belle then I think the characters are much better in MB and the story is told a bit better. Even if special effects have dated badly. MB has a really great soundtrack perfectly synched to the scenes. That makes a huge difference.

After all that, I think the attention to detail in MotA is amazing as are the flying scenes.

There was an engineer fixing an engine as it taxied down the runway last week which seems implausible. If this actually happened then hats off to him, but if not then I'm not sure why they have to add stuff like this.

The screen writer was interviewed with Dan Snow for the history hit podcast said there were situations where the technical advisor would say something couldn't be done but there were first hand reports from veterans saying they had done it. Perhaps only a handful could do it. How embellished for dramatic effect or the passage of time who knows.

I think they earned the benefit of doubt myself.
