Matched betting - who's done it and who's good at it? (No Referrals)

well the whole point of the forum is discussion, to object to something and not be able to give any reasoning is a bit silly makes the objection a bit meaningless

'X is dumb, but I can't be bothered to substantiate that or provide any reasoning why it is dumb'

Im waiting for big events and ill start back up at betting, i made just over 400 in total on matched betting / general betting and hoping in the world cup. I lost abit during that but some was easy as you remember.. brazil to wear yellow netted a lot of us 30 quid. Etc

I did substantiate it and you chose not to accept it - which is your right - I have nothing further to add so discussion over. You carry on thinking what you think, I carry on thinking what I think, the universe continues to revolve unaffected.

tried to find the casino bonus thread from years ago but can't :(

several of us made over £250k between us , I made £13-14k

Them were the days, only made a about £3k over a course of a year because i played really conservative. Then again £3k 10 years ago was worth more.

Sorry I missed that, why is it (placing a series of bets with a positive expected value) a mugs game?

All I've seen is you point out that placing bets is gambling... which is technically correct but doesn't explain why this scenario is a 'mugs game'.

Expected return != guaranteed return.

You could place 10 bets and expect 20% profit by then end of it. You're still relying on chance though to meet that expected return, and could end up losing money. It only works if you're willing to bet continuously to infinity. That's gambling and gambling is a mugs game.

Matched betting on the other hand is not gambling and it guarantees a profit (as long as you place the bets correctly - but that's entirely in your hands and not lady lucks).

Actually you've still got risk with matched betting - counterparty risk and execution risk. Both are 'gambling' and both have a positive expectation. One involves placing a hedge and giving up some expected value in return. The other involves exposing yourself to variance, yes there is a chance of a short term loss but overall your expectation is positive.

You're still unable to explain why it is a mugs game other than pointing out that it is called gambling (which adds nothing) and stating that because it is 'gambling' it is a mugs game. The question is why do you think gambling with a positive expected value is a mugs game? Pointing out that gambling is gambling doesn't actually answer the question.

I haz questions.

I'm at home, bored, and thought I'd place a few matched bets and tinker a bit. I've just seen that I've got £3 in Totesport which isn't withdrawable, so I'm assuming I need to wager it.

Thing is, how do I match it on Betfair? Is there a site which finds lay bets automagically? Any ideas?

trickybet will do the maths. In terms of finding odds matches - not sure about free software. You could just try googling that though 'free back/lay odds matching software' and see what it throws up.

Otherwise just set totesport to decimal and compare with markets in betfair. Note that there is a trick to placing bets under £2 in betfair as you'll be laying a back stake of three quid your lay stake will probably be less than £2 dpeneding on the odds you choose to go for.

Are all of the fixtheodds offers for new customers only? I've had accounts with them all in the past for blackjack and can't seem to use any of them...

From what I can tell, it looks like the potential to get a £25 bet every week, but what's all this 3 leg nonsense? Is that a deal breaker?

It's not a deal breaker, but it is a little riskier than a standard matched bet (because the odds on the second and third legs of the multiple could lengthen by the time you come to lay them).

Still profitable if done right though.

Just out of interest, how many peeps still doing this and got stung by 666Bet just after Cheltmas finished. I got 3 figures in 666bet and basically have now written it off but apparently they are going to make an announcement on Monday so maybe some hope yet.

I lost a 4 figure sum to Canbet in Dec 2013 when they went **** up, so in a way Match Betting does have a risk to it.
