There are 3 things in life you should never skimp on.
Shoes, a chair and a mattress.
If your not in one your in the other.
I'm sure she can stump up an extra £24
I agree and I had said to her before posting you need to spend for quality which she did up her budget from £200 to £300 but wont go any higher.
The other thing with that mattress I just noticed looking at other places is they all rate it as being firm.
Any other suggestions?

not really, £300 IMO is too low going any lower and your better off just buying something cheap until you can afford a decent one

however I would stress highly it's worth spending the extra £75 to get the other one, plus you won't get £25 off this mattress either it's below the limit.
also firm is what you want in a mattress it's their to support your body and keep your spine straight, find it too firm then you can always add a small topper from M & S for comfort

Disagree with the bit about going for a firm mattress a 8st person does not go for a firm ortho mattress especially a single one this is advice from multi bed specialists and even online places state this so not sure how you came up with that answer.

The bed is just a frame. So long as it's solid it doesn't matter on the cost.
You can build a solid bed out of wooden pallets for less than £50 for example and it will be just as good functionality wise as a £300,000 bed albeit not gold plated and diamond encrusted.
The mattress and the slats (support) is the most important part. You can get a decent mattress for around £400. Max spend should probably be around £1K after that all your paying for is stuff you don't really need.

We have this mattress in our guest room, it was our main bed before moving house. It is very comfortable and deep and anyone who's slept on it has commended how comfortable it is.
We just bought one of these, was delivered a couple of weeks ago. I love it and the missus is just about getting used to it, she complained about back pain for a few days but I think she was having a bad time with our old mattress which had a knock on.
We upgraded from a Double so needed to buy everything. We bought the mattress from John Ryan but sourced the divan base, headboard and 3" Coolblue hybrid foam topper elsewhere. Ended up saving quite a bit and the delivery guy was confused thinking we had already had a John Ryan divan as it looked identical. I hadn't noticed at the time but checking the John Ryan site I would guess it's sourced from the same supplier.

Ah right OK. Mattress does look good but from reading their website it seems this one comes with the cheaper pocket springs that are glued together.... You say you upgraded from a double... Did you go to a king size? We already have a double wooden framed bed with slats which i plan to keep, although I've read they recommend sheeting other the slats with MDF or similar which I could easily do. The Mattress looks quite tall so I would assume we would need to get different fitted sheets? Also, is a topper definitely needed? My initial budget before looking around and reading this thread was £300 so that has grown significantly but I don't mind paying more if it means we get years of use and a quality product.

It is quite deep, I think they say it's 9" sides but more Ike 13" overall due to the padding, so possibly more towards "Extra deep" high street sheets but maybe someone else could comment on that, we were buying new anyway due to going for a king so bought some super 40cm deep ones due to the extra topper.
It's perfectly comfortable without the topper, I just fancied it after trying something similar in store and got the coolblue foam pretty cheap from an eBay store. We took the topper off for a few days but I preferred it with and the missus has come round to it.

Quite a few of these new 'bed in box' type things seem to be just a big slab of foam. I've always found something with springs does a much better job of keeping joints/backs happy. I wrecked my back working in a pub, and honestly, getting a pocket sprung mattress was an absolute winner.

I found the Simba to be extremely comfortable but they're definitely not for everyone. Since we got a new firm pocket sprung mattress my other half is no longer waking up in pain. I'm sleeping as well as I did on the Simba so the new one is a win-win really.

I bought the Latex Sense mattress. The Sensation 1500 to be exact.
We haven't yet moved into the place where the mattress is now, but initial impressions are extremely good. I don't know how good it's going to be to actually sleep on, but just lying on it is incredibly comfortable. It feels nicer than my John Ryan Origins Comfort 1000 that I used to have. Hopefully it lasts longer than the JR one too - the JR one developed dips.
I did have to get the latex mattress replaced though as it came damaged. Fortunately the customer service is good and they replaced it within 5 days.

We bought a British Bed Company "The Grand Duke" super king size from Mattress Man a few weeks ago (chose the Grand Duke as it was firmer according to their ratings), made my own bed frame. Really nice mattress, comfy and well made. Very heavy though!

Came yesterday. Had to get a mate to help me up the stairs with it - my stairs aren't straight up so a PITA to get anything up.
Assumed Tesco would have Super King sheets - nope. So used two king fitted sheets just for now.
It's proper huge! Fortunately my bedroom is quite big (Its the same size again behind the photo) so doesn't look stupidly big.
It occurred to me that my mate might find the bed a bit feminine so I said to my GF if he comments, can you say you chose it?

Currently looking for a new mattress our memory foam one has seen better days and we've constantly been waking up in the middle of the night with lower back ache.
Looking to spend around £600 maybe push abit more if need be for a good mattress.
Any recommendations? I've seen the origins pocket mentioned quite a lot in this thread.
Looked at which who recommend a Sealy Teramo 1400 but others have said it's quite hot and coming from a memory foam mattress we want a cooler mattress.
