Mattresses - I need knowledge

Hah, didn't even spot the Artisan range when looking. I think for now we are good with the Origins Pocket 1500, went for a double until our extension is done and will be buying a king then anyway. As soon as that's done, Artisan it'll be!

After discussing my back issues/weight/height JRBD recommended the pocket 1500 but i opted for the slightly more expensive artisan 1500 in 2015. My mattress had a 'smell' to it which was perfectly normal so I left the mattress in my spare room for a couple weeks to 'air' before using it. I kept to the recommended routine of turning/flipping and its still like new!

Brill - I'll see if we need to do that. Thankfully it will be delivered to our new place a couple of weeks before we are actually moving in so good to know. I was impressed how quickly they called me after I ordered; he asked me a few more questions just to make sure I'd ordered the right one and then sorted everything out. Seem like a pleasant company to deal with.

Same, they were really pleasant to deal with and helped me no end. Can't remember exactly which mattress I bought, but 2 years on it's still in really good condition, regular flip and turn helps I think.

I apologise for not reading the whole thread, but search tells me no-one has mentioned a Casper mattress. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Couple of YouTubers I follow tried them out seemed quite impressed but had some weird discrepancies with sizes/fits not quite being standard.

Got my John Ryan mattress delivered last week and finally slept on it from Saturday, so three nights in. Brilliant mattress. My last mattress was twice the price and nowhere near as good.

Very pleased with your recommendation guys!

My missus got rid of our old orthopaedic mattress for some p.o.c and I am suffering with back pain. It takes a couple of hours each morning for me to shake it off.
I am side sleeper and weigh around 80kg, what mattress do you recommend for a aging grumpy old git with Backache?

Go down to one of those bed shops like Benson's for Beds where they have one of those magic mattresses that looks at how you lie in bed and somehow determines the best mattress for you.

We've been through a number of mattresses in the past year trying to find one that doesn't screw up my back. I found nirvana in sleeping duck. They do a 100 night trial.

I was sceptical as it was bought to replace a £2k high spec mattress but it blows it away.

Without being an expert my thoughts are at 80kg you probably need a medium-soft mattress, or say a 2 or 3 on the dreams bed scale (where 1 is softest and I think 5 hardest).
Ultimately you need to try different beds. Ask if you can sleep in the shop overnight :). Failing that, getting someone to check the straightness of your spine when you're in your sleeping positions should help.
Generally I think heavier people need a firmer mattress and lighter = softer. Some just have a preference. Harder is probably okay for those who sleep on their back regardless of weight. Side sleepers need hips/shoulders to sink in more to keep the spine straight.

It's all down to preference so your best bet is to try out loads. It has to suit you and your missus.

For what it's worth, when I went through the same exercise recently we tried dozens and dozens of beds including all the different types of memory foam and 'mattress topper' beds. We ultimately decided that the former are too hot and the latter are very soft at the edges, so we plumped with a 'normal' microsprung bed from Hypnos and frankly it's incredible - best decision we've made for ages.

Got it with a bed from John Lewis and they did 0% finance for 12 Months which softened the blow.

The only other thing I'd add is that we didn't read the instructions ("lol why would a bed need instructions?!") which suggested we turned the bed every week during the first month or so. Doesn't seem to have made a difference but if I'd have known I'd have complied.
