Mattresses - I need knowledge

THE BEST Mattress we ever had was one from ebay. 12" thick 6" memory foam. Cost about £300...Threw it away when we moved thinking we could just buy another.....Nope can't find the same one again. Been through 3 other all *****

Casper one’s no good then?

I might give one of those a try, if no good send it back.

I've read through the full thread and it looks like those that have never had a decent mattress might like them due to ignorance but with so many conflicting reviews it turns out that those people who have tried better end up with something that is a proper mattress which doesn't come rolled up in a box.

Casper is the same thing as otty, simba just a different flavour.

Go ikea if you want decent and cheap and go pocket spring.

Do you know if any of the Ikea pocket springs have edge support so you can sit on the edge?

They do yes. Check website for info. I'm looking at the top of the range hidrasund.

Personally I've had a £1600 mattress before pocket sprung and can't see why I should fork out for similar when I'm sure that will be more than enough for the next 10 years

looks to be if you want a cheap mattress that is decent buy from IKEA and go for pocket springs if you can.

if you want to spend more than £1K then buy from john ryan.

Or alternatively spend £800~ on a john Ryan mattress. Sure there are £1k ones but we’ve had a £800 and it’s great. Far better than than the cheaper ones. Buy cheap buy twice seems very true on mattresses

Has anyone had any experience of the John Ryan bases? The only seem to recommend and supply divans. I'm particularity interested in how robust their drawer bases and runners are, as this seems to be a weak point on a lot of bases.

ok , found them thanks.

Google took me to a pocket sprung mattress called HÖVÅG which shows a picture of them being rolled up in a bag and i thought that can't be right which is why i originally asked. :)

Yeah the hovag is similar to the otty and simba range.

If that is all you can afford then you are saving £300 vs buying another roll up mattress.

I'd personally try and increase your budget for one of the £300-£400 options if you can.

Personally I'm likely to go for the hidrasund for £799

It's a single for the spare room for when people stay over but it looks like it will have to be in the £300-£400 range otherwise it's a roll up , i'm not that cruel. :D

lots of reviews of ikea mattresses not being particularly durable and sagging within a short time. Think i'm going to be going with the John Ryan origins 1500 for £855 (Super King Size only available in zip & link).

We had an ikea mattress for a few years and it was ok, the sagging could be because it’s one sided and not double.
We’ve been sleeping on a John Ryan artisan naturals super king, and absolutely love it.

update on my Simba mattress'

1st replaced faulty - collapsed on the edges
2nd replaced faulty - a dip formed half way down the bed in a straight line causing hips to sink in the bed
3rd few months in and can already feel indentations, a definite high spot in the middle of the mattress.

wouldn't recommend one to anyone, unless you weight the same as a bag of sugar. I'm not a small person but I'm by no means a lump of lard. 100kg which is under that recommendation by them.

I've never known a mattress to sink as quick as these do.

going to wait this one out, if it gets bad then will just bite the bullet and get a different mattress.

You rotate it like once a month right?

i bet a lot of those reviews are talking about their foam mattresses or miracoil or whatever they call it.

i've been in the store and been on them. they must have a lot of bodies go through their store. i don't know how often they change them but no issues on the decent ones i sat on. there was a documentary on ikea a year or so back. their product quality testing actually surprised me at the level of testing they do.

the one i'm looking at also is their most expensive one the hidrasund.

with john ryan i feel your paying a lot for the labour rather than the product. so it makes more sense to buy a high end john ryan. with ikea you know it's mass produced less labour cost. if i had to choose between a £800 john ryan and a £800 ikea mattress i think ikea would win out. they come with 25/30 year guarantees on the one i'm looking at.

john ryan makes more sense if you are looking to spend more so more money is going into the product rather than labour as that should only increase by a little on the more complicated mattresses. they hare hand made in britain and the ethics of the company i like the sound of. customer service and product at the heart of it. personally if i was going to go for one of their mattresses i'd want to be dropping at least £2K on one.

The 3 year warranty on the John Ryan Origins 1500 did worry me as didn't want to shell out over £800 on something that would only last possibly 3 years and not get covered for any faults. Didn't realise ikea's warranty was so long. Any idea how they are with there warranty claims?

I ask as we are having a nightmare with Bensons for beds. We bought a bed (mattress, divan and headboard) a few years ago, think it was about 2014. The side of the mattress buckled so they sent someone to inspect it. We were told it was faulty and had to exchange it because they didn't make that particular one anymore, but because we bought it as a set we had to exchange everything, the mattress, divan and headboard. We wanted to upgrade to a superking size anyway as the new house we just moved to had a much bigger bedroom. So we had to pay an extra £100 or so and that was that. Now the new mattress has significant sagging (measured it ourselves at 40mm) on both sides where we sleep, i weigh 100kg, my wife about 70kg and we rotated it all the time (cannot flip). We phoned bensons and they weren't interested, we had to arrange our own inspection (which costs £150 through the furniture ombudsman) and can't complain to the furniture ombudsman until 12 weeks after the initial complaint which was only about 3 weeks ago. Then if they deem it is faulty we get the money back and have to go through the whole palava again of going and getting a whole new bed, but we don't really want to because the sagging will probably happen in a couple of years again. And if they don't deem it to be faulty then we are stuck with the same bed and £150 down. So we just want to go buy a new mattress and keep the divan and headboard.

My thinner Casper Essential has been perfect for me but there caveats. On a hard flat base it has little give and any single point of pressure such as leaning on you hand can dig deep. However once lying on it I've never been more comfortable my recent bad back has gone completely. I would definitely say my previous pocket mattress was starting to dip and was contributing to that.

Probably been said but foam mattresses can feel warm immediately around the body and if you do tend to sweat a bit in bed then definitely get a 5+ layer for the extra breath-ability and softness if preferred. No problem for me being fairly lean.
