Mattresses - I need knowledge

Just bought a Yours and Mine Dual Firmness mattress from Slientnight.

Has a medium half and a firm half with a Gel layer topper.

Been five nights so far and has been excellent for my wife & I.

Changed from a Memory Foam mattress that was only five years old but was already knackered.

My John Ryan Artisan Luxury is being returned on Tuesday, softest in their range but it’s just too firm and neither of us are getting used to it.
Hi, I just had a look and that bed isn't classed as soft. The softest in that bed range is a medium, which is what I'm assuming you have? Are you going to swap it? How long have you trialed it for?
I've got my John Ryan origins 1500 being delivered today, I'm praying it's decent, if this doesn't work out I'm off to Benson for beds or Dreams and buying a bed the old fashioned way!

Anyone got any recommendations or advice on mattress toppers ?
Hi, I'm currently using a John Lewis synthetic 6cm topper on an Otty hybrid bed that makes it just about tolerable. I did try the Panda memory foam topper which has a 30 night trial, this basically ruined my back so I sent that back. It was really soft. What's your situation?

When I was looking to buy I went from their sliding scale of firm to softest upholstery https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/product/artisan-luxury/

It has the medium springs, the soft springs are for a very low body weight I believe. I'm going for a refund instead of swap, as you can only return once. Their reply when I asked to return was:

"The Artisan Luxury is the softest mattress we create, so we don't have anything we could swap it to, so we will start the returns process."

It was delivered on 14th January.

I think it may make a difference if it is on a sprung divan, we have rigid base. This makes it hard to compare in shops as I'm finding most of theirs seem to be on sprung divan also.

We find it firm, but my partners family who visited recently said it was soft xD

That's really interesting and I think it goes to show how subjective beds really are. What was your previous bed? I'm coming from an Otty Hybrid which is pretty damn firm and we also have a Simba Hybrid Pro which is a bit softer but I think all these Hybrid beds are pretty much the same.

Good point about the base, I'm on a solid wood Divan. So many things to factor into comfort isn't there?

Our previous mattress was a Kaymed V85 Elation, which according them is "viscoelastic material", kind of like memory foam. They don't appear to sell it anymore. It started forming dips within 2 years which put me off looking at memory foam type beds again. It's around 7 years old now and getting more uncomfortable.

We went to a mattress store on Saturday, some of the beds were like rocks. Tried a couple of cheap Kaymeds and they were surprisingly comfortable on the hips given how firm they felt by hand. Also a Reylon 2850 pillowtop which was very soft.

It's hard to know what to choose!

Hi everyone,

So I've slept 1 night on the John Ryan Origins Pocket 1500 and I'm quite literally blown away by the quality of sleep. I know it's only one night and I will follow this up later just so people know if this remains the same, however initial signs are good.

A little bit about my situation which might help others: 40 year old male, 5 ft 11, 12 stone, long term left shoulder injury (had surgery), constant lower back pain, long term right knee injury (had surgery), side sleeper. I've been sleeping on a Otty Hybrid for the past few years which hasn't been comfortable and more recently a Simba hybrid Pro which was better but still not good.

The feeling this morning when getting out of bed was crazy how different it has been compared to the previous beds, I usually wake up with a lot of stiffness and soreness especially as I sleep on my left side which is my bad shoulder. The John Ryan bed felt pretty soft and I was worried it was going to be too soft but the support was fantastic once you are lying down, it felt like I barely moved last night and woke up earlier than normal feeling refreshed.

I hope this helps!

I'm in the market for a new mattress this year after having this one for too long.. some cheap Argos double spring one that I started feeling the springs in 5 years ago, so bought a foam topper from Amazon and aired the horrible fire retardant chemical smell off it for a few days before putting it on then sleeping with the smell until it finally went away - but best purchase ever coz it felt great and still does but its time to refresh/upgrade.

What a minefield the world of mattresses are. ok so John Ryan check. They might currently be out of stock of super king size as the option is greyed out. I went around a few shops last year out of interest, its so hard (or medium) to find the right one. You assume, spend more = better, but tbh I don't think it has to be like that in the world of mattresses.

I do actually have a member of family that runs a bed shop and you would think thats a good thing but due to the nature of trying in shop vs sales pitch vs marketing, there would feel a certain pressure for me to buy from them once I go down that route. :)

The John Ryan Fusion 3 sounds interesting since I'm used to some kind of topper. How often do they have a sale and is it possible to try them out or just rely on their customer service should it need to be returned?

John Ryan Fusion 3 £1875 (super king)
Eve Original £509 + John Ryan Latex topper £530 = £1039

I'll be trying some out in the shops again I think, see if I can find some latex ones to get some idea what they're like.

Interesting thanks for posting that.

What brings you to that combination? It wasn't mentioned in the video but I might have missed it because I watched it while sorting my kids tea

Heh well now I'm looking into spending the money on an all latex mattress, but I'll need to give them a try first at least and I'll find out if I could get a family discount via my bro in law, his shop is listed on the Dunlopillo website which is cool. But it'll be a little while until I can save for that as they are around £2000 but I actually don't mind spending and latex mattress sound like they last.

The guy in the review above seems to know his stuff reviewing a few mattresses and bed-in-a-box types, he recommended the Emma one could have a topper on it. I just think after using my memory foam some kind of topper can make a difference - although not really needed if the Emma mattress is enough.

some notes/feature that I think I want in a mattress:
  • after using a cheapy one I want to get away from springs
  • the foam topper I have was great but does sink in a bit which causes slight effort when switching side of my body I lay on
  • I'm a side sleeper so from what I've heard medium is the way to go (I'm 6'4" and currently on the heavy side 100kg but I might get down to a better 85kg again with some cycling :))
I'll let you know how it goes when I do decide what to go for :)

Cheers, I sleep in all different positions so it's hard to pick a mattress but I've read the same regarding side sleeping and firm and I mostly asleep on my side but also my front and sometimes my back!

Last memory foam mattress i had destroyed my back but I think it was a cheap crappy one. I've got time to decide because not buying until the autumn but with mattresses you need all the time you can get to research them

Why buy a brand new Mattress and a topper? Toppers should only be used if you've already got a mattress and it's either too firm or soft? You're best getting a good mattress which doesn't need a topper.
I'd avoid all those bed in a box things they're basically the same thing, it's pure marketing.

Those Alan Ross reviews are pretty good, when I was doing my research I also read reviews on sleep hero which was useful when looking at the firmness ratings.

I'd honestly recommend calling John Ryan and if you don't like it, return it for a refund.

I realise this thread is mainly about mattress advice but I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good quality, supportive memory foam or similar pillow?

Get an adjustable that comes with loads of spare foam, I got one from Amazon and it's been amazing for my neck, wish I knew sooner I must have been through 10 pillows in the last few years and it turns out all I needed was adjustable and your u can have it exactly as you want it, got loads of spare foam too so when it starts to be less supportive just add more

I'm really interested in this, can you tell us what you bought? I've spent a small fortune on pillows and I find they are either too high or too low so that sounds like a great solution.
