Mclaren-Honda MP4-30 *** 2015 Launch Thread

Dont know why people keep referring to the old colour scheme as 'Honda Colours'

The red and white was due to Marlboro sponsorship which dictated the colours. They probably wouldn't be allowed to use the red and white scheme again due to it being linked to 'cigarette branding' which as we know is now banned.

I also read that one reason McLaren use the chrome paint is so that sponsors logos stand out to their fullest. You have to think with a commercial mind when talking about branding/colours on cars

Honda's traditional colour is white.

Regards the sponsorship, wouldn't a white background make them stand out as much?

Of course you can use red and white, no one was expecting the same livery but white is the traditional Honda colour (even Bar Honda had white/red).

BAR Honda were red & white before they'd even linked up with Honda (well half of the car was anyway).

I thought the silver colour represented arrows/mercedes so having that instead of white just seems bizarre, but what do I know. Some blue pinstripes around the red would have looked nice but at the end of the day it's all about performance, we'll forget the livery after Alonso wins in Australia :D

I must have pointed this out 5 times here now, but no, McLaren had the red/white Marlboro livery for 2 years while they were running Mercedes engines. The Black/white/silver started with the West sponsorship and then just evolved thereafter after the West deal finished. It had nothing to do with Mercedes, and continued even after they became mere customers rather than the works deal they had for all those years.

And, because they haven't finalised their sponsors yet I think we haven't seen the race colours, neither are we seeing a test or a race car. Like anyone would be so dumb as to reveal any aerodynamic secrets on a launch of the car. So any analysis of the cars now will not reflect what will be racing in Australia...

ASo any analysis of the cars now will not reflect what will be racing in Australia...

Whilst mostly true in terms of wings, bargeboards, nose tweaks etc. things like suspension geometry and general body shape can be analysed as they ultimately don't change too much.

I like the design on its own but...
with the rest of the grid it's definitely conservative McLaren.
Was hoping for white and red
It's too similar to their Mercedes era. I know it's not indicative but would have been a great time for big change

I wonder if they have decided to change it following the universal dislike of the current livery?

The t-shirts and hats bear no connection to the livery, so there is hope.

He can't say when because the board haven't decided yet :cries:

Yes it wouldn't surprise me if the McLaren board are having a meeting about when the next board meeting will be, sigh.

Ron may polarise opinion, but I do wish he would just get enough shares to get back overall control and start to make decisions his own way.

*Anything* by 'committee' is always going to be a timewasting compromise (imho of course!)

Interesting addition to the McLaren livery tweet, now asking followers to vote between orange and red/white.

They wouldn't leave it to a public vote, would they?

I'm fairly sure that's just the guys running their Twitter stream ramping up a bit of hype.

True, but given the team in question I think even their social media department are on a tight leash, and wouldn't post something without any substance, or RonFirmation.

These aren't the comedians of Lotus remember :p

I really don't get McLaren at the moment. For a company so obsessed with image it's strange they are portraying such a mish mash of corporate identities.

Just watched Teds day 3 note book and the boards they put up at the back of the garage are all white and dark green with silver lettering, the colours of the M2B. This matches the new team wear and the new driver overall's.

But the motorhome is still chrome and black like last year. I get that painting the motorhome is probably low on their priority list though, so its likely just not been done yet.

But then they go to the effort of painting the car black and chrome... and red. There is litterally no red anywhere else on any of their branding. They can't claim its just last years colours like they can with the motorhome as its a brand new car. Someone has taken the new bare carbon fibre body and chosen to paint it that colour.

So they have gone to the effort of producing new team wear and new hoardings for their garage, and also painted their new car, but they seem to have been done to 2 completely different corporate images. Its so bizzare.

Maybe, just maybe, the silver and black is their testing livery and they will be changing before Australia. Would explain the 2 corporate identities and the tweet about changing colour but not saying when.

But then why go to the effort to make a new livery, and not just go with the black and chrome of last year?

And if they found time too order all the team kit in new colours and paint all the branded boards and screens, why not use the same colours on the car? They have taken the time to do a 'proper' livery on the car (I.e. not just a single colour or something), but got the colours wrong.

Maybe we are seeing a visual representation of the political battle in McLaren? Could it be that the person who signed off the team wear and branding colours is a different person to the one who signed off the car colours?
