McLaren Honda

According to the BBC web site Honda are looking for an engine for McLaren and Alonso won't stay much longer.
I have to wonder who has put the boot in here, has Ron dropped them all in it?
I also have to wonder what Jenson and in fact Stoffel are thinking.
Andi.

You mean to say that Honda are looking for an alternative engine to their own for McLaren? Like a Mercedes? If so, wow.

I think if they didn't have to participate in order to retain their participation with the sport, they should just stop until they get a new PU from someone else. It's so damaging to their brands.

Sorry looks like I misread the quote on the BBC from Motorsport.com Honda are trying to supply to other teams, McLaren are looking at other engines.
Who though in their right mind would take a Honda engine at the moment, maybe Manor would have?
Andi.

I can't help thinking that going back to Merc power wouldn't give them what they want... Can they really beat the factory team? They couldnt do it before the switch to Honda so how could they do it now??

Also the whole Alonso thing is a bit boring. He only would've won a title in the last 3 years if he was driving a Merc and before that he would've needed to be in a Redbull. (He obviously came close in the Ferrari one year before he left for Mclaren) He made the jump and it hasnt paid off, deal with it. Either wait for a better car or retire!? Or wait and see what happens at silly season at the end of the year. I dont feel sorry for him as hes still being paid a fortune and it was his choice at the end of the day.

Alonso would have really been unhappy at Ferrari the last few years, especially with Seb taking any limelight. I think he made the right decision at time as a Merc drive wasn't available. It just hasn't turned out good for him.
Andi.

I agree, but in 2007 he set in motion the series of events that has led him to today. If he hadn't been such a sore loser at McLaren in 2007 he very well could've won the championship in 2008 and be at Mercedes right now.

I'll still go out on a limb and say he'll be in a Mercedes next year.

Mercedes are clearly thinking they want another top driver in that team which is why they only gave Bottas a 1 year deal (and Vettel or Alonso are the only obvious options at the moment). I wouldn't bet on Hamilton sticking around after this season either.

That was as much McLaren and Hamilton's fault as it was Alonso's. We only saw the fallout after the Hungarian GP, but many say it started back in Monaco.

They're both more mature now and there's much more respect between them. Could they work in the same team again? Only a select few know that, but if they are considering it and Hamilton is staying at Mercedes for 2018, then I fully expect they've already discussed it.

Yes I think Lewis will give up soon so a seat there may be available, if Bottas does well he'll stay. However Mercedes could be losing this year and may not be the 'place to be' a bit like red Bull suddenly lost it.
Andi.

I think if Lewis wins the WDC this year he'll be off. I read that he wanted to match Senna and he's done that so he might just be trying to go out on a high? Who knows... Maybe we are seeing the start of the period of Ferrari dominance? So this season could be his last chance. (I know i know, we've only had one race... :p)

.

Maybe at this point McLaren are just after decent points - so even if they cant compete with Ferrari and Merc, they should be able to mix it up with RBR and the rest depending on the track (which should at least give them solid points chances every race which is a substantial step forward from where they are after 3 years with Honda)

Dont get me wrong, long term they obviously need a factory team so they can compete directly with Ferrari and Merc, but right now to keep the income up they need solid points finishes

What I would like to hear more about was during Martins grid walk yesterday he mentioned about an intense discussion between Alonso & Ross Brawn. Martin did tackle Zak Brown about it on the grid but Zak was playing his cards very close to his chest. Could this be the early discussions regarding more testing???

surly Alonso is now done? no where to go and is getting on.
and McLaren/honda is a laughing stock.

mclaren going back to Mercedes wont get them what they want. Its nigh on impossible to beat the factory team.

I'm surprised at people thinking Hamilton will leave Merc, I can't see where else he would go? I mean any team would gladly have him for ability alone but other than Ferrari (which I guess is the feather every driver wants in their cap), where would he go? Even with Ferrari, I can't see them being as dominant as Mercedes have been. In fact I'd go as far as saying this week will be a rare occurrence this season, and most races will be a Mercedes 1-2.

I think the only reason he'd leave is if he'd just had enough of the sport, but he clearly still enjoys as shown this weekend. He seemed pretty pleased even with 2nd place. If he has another year of engine woes then maybe, but even then I can see him being around for a very long time

I meant leaving the sport when i said it above. It just seems to me he has a lot he wants to do outside of F1? I've also heard him say in an interview that the Ferrari thing doesnt bother him too much. Whether thats actually the case is something else though. :p Unlike say Grosjean who literally can't stop talking about his desire to drive for Ferrari! Lol

Yeah, he loves hanging out with celebs and going to big fashion gigs etc. But surely a lot of the reason he gets invited to these things is because he too is a celeb by virtue of being world champion or an elite level driver. If that stopped, would anyone really be interested in him after a while?

He says he loves his music too, but let's be real, will that ever materialise in to anything other than a rich kids hobby?

If LH wins another title with Mercedes this year, I can see him taking the opportunity to see his career out with a Ferrari team that now seem to be competitive.

he also said plenty of times, he loves f1 and will carry on the lifestyle he has for a longtime.
Cant see LH going anywhere or changing his way, he loves racing and he loves the celeb lifestyle.
He also seems to care far more about titles and stats than racing
