Your armies usually disappear when you move them around with either no general in them, or one with a poor loyalty rating. They are either bribed, or they just defect. It's the main reason why I pay so much attention to the popups at the beginning of each turn - I go through them with more care than just about anything else! It's so easy to right-click the wrong one and miss out on something vital. Some folk (like my ex-flatmate) would fly through them, barely reading them, then wonder wtf was going on
And princesses....well, I always thought mine had disappeared, then realised that the "we have found a worthy suitor for a woman of your family" meant she was getting hitched and had to scarper back sharpish, if you say ok.
I lost a huge army just south of Bruges which was on it's way to help out in Switzerland once - it had 12 good quality units in it, but no general, and they just turned into rebels with no-one anywhere near them. I bet if you send an army through the area, you'll find your army sitting there in rebel colours......I always find sending an assassin in to kill the leader is very satisfying.

and see what happens.
- actually, I wish my forces in the Holy Land had more of everything! Dunno how I'm gonna get them over there - I'm at war with the HRE, Venice and the Mongols (who have taken over Egypt, The Turks and The Byzantine Empire) - the Mongols are so filthy rich its unreal
