Mercedes Benz and AMG Owners

My 68 plate E200 was just collected by the logistics people who do work for Leaseplan.

2 year deal
10k per annum

Because of Covid I only ended up doing 16,600 miles!

They couldn't believe what great condition it was in. Little do they know my puppy puked all over the back seat/floor a few months back.....puke about 30 minutes after she had eaten dog poo. You can imagine the smell of that

The trusty Vax carpet cleaning machine we have dealt with that problem.

Bye bye lovely interior/space.

My E220 goes back next month. I extended it for 6 months over Christmas as the price offered was too good to refuse but it has sat on my drive mainly. Had it services 2 weeks back to be told the rear tyres are 1mm so will need to get them done too, annoyingly.

Good car, but the ride when you hit big craters (all over roads around me) is utterly bone shaking, like it hits the suspension stops and that is a big flaw in the car. R8 was smoother on big hits, E Class better for normal day to day. Bad dumps send the rear end sideways, crappy damping.

I found mine was pretty comfy to be honest, but I would have preferred it on 18" wheels instead of the 20" it came with.

Then again I came from an MSport 5 series on run flats so maybe I just got used to stiff suspension over the years?

Edit - big potholes were horrific now that you mention it. But aren't all cars really when they hit those things?

Not really in my experience, some are much better than others on the big ones. I think big wheels and run flat tyres hinder things, but when a low slung sports car (both R8 or GTR) seem to deal with the big ones better (though not the small ones at all as well) there is something wrong when you get into that final damping bit. It is not acceptable to me to have a car throwing TC lights when I hit a rut that other cars just drive over with aplomb. F10 530D was bad in such conditions, but this for me is worse.

My c class with its 19s are horrific with potholes. Dad's v70r and brothers S3 are far better absorbing them.

The V70 was one I was comparing it too as was a current 520i SE both friends cars I’ve been over common potholes and seen them deal with them far better. Roads are terrible these days so likely shows it up more.

My E Class was assaulted in January 2020 by a BMW on a slip road around Stoke. To be fair I felt sorry for the lad who hit me, one of those moments when the world stopped, I JUST stopped to be followed by BOOM when he didn't. The Mercedes emergency braked on my behalf and I am of the opinion I would have stopped it myself, consumed the extra 2 yards and the lad behind might not have hit me, but who knows.

So....have a guess how much to repair? (Shorade, Cannock, done properly)

That’s an incredible amount surely?

They must have replaced the entire rear end for that money.
Loads of bits on the quote over 3-4 pages of parts each one with a price. Top bodyshop so comes with top body shop costs I suppose but his insurers were fine once they sent their guy in to survey it.

Given that a fender bender in a Tesco car park in my old C250 cost about £4k to fix all in, and that was just for a new rear bumper and respray alongside investigations to find other damage, I had a feeling that was going to be over £10k

Insurance work really is a blank cheque for these guys.

I thinking of buying an E220d, probably 2017, when things unlock (I was previously looking at getting a plug-in hybrid, but have scrapped that idea, and will go full ev next). What do I need to watch out for, and are there any particular toys I should be looking out for?

Are you going to be doing lots of miles, or looking at a vehicle with lots of miles on it? Assuming you are looking at the W213, as 2017 was the EOL for W212.

I'll probably be doing around 15k miles. I was looking for something with less than 45k miles on it, and yes the W213.

Have you considered the E350e? Slightly more upfront than the 220d, but 299PS, and it will hold more residual value than a diesel (probably cost you the same over 3-5 years), seen some decent examples with Premium Plus pack in the AMG Line trim for circa £19k, probably get them for a bit less as well depending on f you are looking at private or main dealer, I'd take a warranty out on any E-class though, they aren't cheap to have fixed.
