Mercedes Benz and AMG Owners

£10k off at £36k isn't that bad is it?

Yes, it really is quite bad - this is a used car, you could probably get this level of discount on a brand new factory order. You certainly can on the E Class main competition - the Audi A6 3.0 TDI and the BMW 530d and both of these are fresher models. To pay only £10k under list on a second hand example of this car strikes me as madness.

The E Class I had for a week was an E220 AMG Night Edition. It was a nice car with many good aspects, as I said in the other thread the performance and functionality of the Adaptive LED headlights was breathtaking, it was refined, it was very well made but it really was showing its age inside and it had a number of really quite antiquated features I would not expect on a car of this type. It's been years since BMW and Audi moved to proper graphical displays for Park Distance Control yet the E Class still had a bizarre plastic bar on the dash with some LED's on it, it was like something out of Maplin. Other things that really showed this cars age include the stupid manual foot parking brake and button-strewn Vauxhall Astra-esque centre console.

For me this model E Class makes most sense in the £15k bracket where it is usefully cheaper and thus better value for money than it's BMW alternative. The used market doesn't seem to like the E Class as much as the 5 Series and prices reflect that - you can get a newer and better specified car for your money at this end of the market in an E Class.

If you have a huge pile of money burning a hole in your pocket and you desire an E Class I implore you to wait - the new E Class looks like a sensational car and I'd be very surprised if it doesn't go straight to the top of the class - it is the first of the big three to enter the next generation of executive cars.

Don't spend £36k on the current gen E Class. It just isn't a £36k car anymore. It feels like a car from a previous decade..

E classes always seem to have mad money off them. As well as surprisingly strong residuals.

E Class residuals for this generation are, irrelevances like Lexus aside, the poorest in it's segment. Mercedes did itself no favours residually when the facelift ended up making the pre facelift versions look like a different model entirely, it was so radical it made the older ones look quite obviously 'old model' which really won't have helped residuals. It might be dull and boring when Porsche, BMW and Audi facelift in a 'blink and you'll miss it' style but it really supports residuals.

But the residuals on offer through PCP are incredible. When I looked at the E class, they were offering a good £2-3k more after the term, than the A6 or the 5 series. Making it the substantially cheaper option. I would have been a good £150+ better off per month in the E class.

In the end, I moved up to the 3.0L and paid £200 pm more than the E250 I was looking at. Compared to just £40 per month more than the 520d.

I agree that in all other situations the residual would be worse, but if you're willing to keep the car for the full term, and return it, the Merc makes more sense.

.

Thanks Fox, I will take your advice and wait for the new model; after all that's why I asked for advice and opinions in the first place. Thanks for your help, its very much appreciated. :D

:D

Great cars and a lovely sound too.

It was fantastic, sounds incredible for a 2 litre engine, and the pop/crackle when changing gear was superb too. The brakes are the best I've ever used.

Really, it's too fast to enjoy properly on the road, and not all that well mannered at low speeds, but certainly not what I'd call uncomfortable.

I think I'd fear for my licence!

I was going to post this a while ago but I just never got around to it! Had the opportunity to get an extended drive around in a 65 plate C63 S AMG. And it is a stunning machine. Usual disclaimer applies about rushed iPotato pictures and video scattered through this wall of text!

I'm not entirely sure on the figures - I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong! This is the 4.0 V8 Bi-Turbo AMG 'S' version producing ~510bhp against the regular C63 AMG (which kicks out about the same as my W219 CLS55 at 476bhp stock).

I was a bit wary of the fact that they'd dropped the engine size even further - I love the 5.5 Bi Turbo in the E63/CLS63 (yet to drive one in anger) and was really hoping this would give a bit of an insight into what the bigger (older) brother could offer - early days yet but the CLS63 is on the shortlist for my next car in a few years time.

Obligatory under the bonnet shot of the snails

First impressions are that it is quite a big car from the outside - it has a few subtle styling changes that set it apart from the regular C class which I think work quite well (vents, bodywork lines etc). Nothing OTT - no massive spoilers or anything. Inside, it is logically laid out and doesn't seem big from the drivers seat.

Retained the usual AMG big brakes

Of course, the quad exhausts - the single best thing about this car is, without a doubt, the sound it makes. It is incredible. It has the ability to be refined in 'normal' mode but slip the settings into sport or sport+ and the exhaust flaps open and all hell is unleashed. It growls and barks like a monster! Lovely rumble on acceleration and doesn't drone or feel too loud at all. That might be a different story from outside the car, however judging by the attention the car got with all the pops and bangs on the overrun :D

Speaking of settings, there are many adjustments to be made to the way the car drives - both the sound and the handling. There's electronic control for the suspension for sure (dunno if it has an LSD but there's a Race mode setting - unfortunately I only found this towards the end of the test drive so could try it out :()

The interior is decently made - nothing rattled and creaked (as you'd expect!) but there was a lot of plastic to be seen - compared to my CLS55 which has leather EVERYWHERE, it was a bit different. The instrument cluster and infotainment/COMAND is very well integrated and easy to use.

Lots of chrome and AMG branding to be seen

One thing I did like was the HUD (I'd not driven a a car that had one before). It was unobtrusive and quite useful actually. The car told me about speed limit changes as I was driving - not sure if this is linked to the Navigation or whether this is active road sign reading. (Excuse the poor choice of location for the picture...I just happened to have pulled up at a random lay by!)

The parking system was also very impressive (though, anything is better than the light bars and beeps the older cars have!). A set of cameras around the car provide a 360 degree aerial view in real time of the car and surroundings to assist with parking - its really quite impressive!

It was a blast to drive - surprisingly chuckable and handled very well (albeit a bit bumpy and poorer roads) and the acceleration was excellent. However, it didn't 'feel' as quick as I expected it to be. It was very fast, undeniably, but I really don't think it'd outpace my CLS55 - even given the slight power difference. I also preferred the interior of my CLS..it just seems a bit...nicer. I could live with all that though given the noise it makes when you turn the exhaust to Sport+ and put your foot to the floor.

A great write up of the C63. I love the speed limit notification - mine uses the forward camera to scan for speed limit signs - picks up the temporary motorway limits too, always useful to have a reminder :)

Ummm i should not be allowed near the internet :P Just bought a e55amg . Flying to Scotland Thursday to collect it . 1 owner . service every 6 months via main dealer . Meticulous owner who would swap all 4 tyres when rears were low .. Can wait !

Awesome - is that a W211? Seconded for pics :)

Very nice. Still prefer the 6.2 litre C63 though.

Will you be buying this?

I agree - the 6.2 is a lovely engine and one of the last of a dying breed as a NA V8.

The new one is a brilliant car but I don't think it's something I could see myself in right now. I think I'd prefer the slightly older 5.5 CLS63 or something else a little different like a Mas GT. Besides, I'm quite happy with my W219 CLS55 so I think it'll be a little while before that goes anywhere!

Well after abit of hassle with my dam flight (canceled as only 3 people booked ) and a frantic drive to hull to get another plane . Car paid and collected.. Was even better than he described but has left me in a quandary . This was for a project and its heart was going to go in something else .. BUT its so clean i dont have the heart to rip the engine out .. But i done need this car !! Argh ... So maybe use it as a toy for 3 months then flip it and keep looking for a rougher car to pinch the engine from :P

Its a w210 btw e55 amg 5.5l 370ish bhp .

Due to arriving late i still dont have any decent pics so will update when i take some !! . Right shall finish my drive home !

Snaggle

Finally got all the bits together for my DIY air intake mod and spent the evening hacking away, measuring up and fitting.

Sounds so good :D

Need to get hold of some more stainless pipework for the front ducting tubes as they are still a bit restrictive (and it'll look better than the black plastic!)
